Impulse theme should have a play button but this has to be done with javascript. You can however add controls but this will included a download button. See image for reference. Sorry I am not familiar with the Impulse code.
is there something different to the variants?

Looks like you have multiple video on the first variant when you select it. One is vimeo, one is mp4
no, we just checked if this is working with embedded vid from Vimeo, but also not
This will need to debug inside, I cannot find anything wrong
