Why isn't my custom 404 page displaying on my free theme?

Wow this is a tough question to search on, since all the answers I find are about “why is something 404’ing” or “how do I customize my 404 page”? I have a shopify free theme. I have a custom 404 page configured. However, when I force a 404 (e.g. https://www.aliseats.com/pages/bad.url), all I get back is a page whose source consists of 9 characters. Why is the custom 404 page not being used? Thank you.

Hi @buggysoftware

This is Noah from PageFly - Shopify Page Builder App

Regards your concern, please make sure that you have customized the 404 page on the right template. Make sure it is a 404 template like this screenshot not on other page.

Because only one 404 template is applied to all bad.url ( 404) page.

Hope this can help you solve the issue

Thanks, but that was not it. For someone who comes here before wasting an hour and a half with support, the trick in my case was to modify and save the 404 page in the template. The default configuration for that page existed, but was not being served until the file was “touched”.

Does that got used to your page now?
