I added a favicon since a couple of months it is not shown anymore - I tried 16x16, 48x48, 96x96 file format png.

When you go into your theme settings where you added your original favicon is the image still appearing there? How long has it been since you tried uploading a favicon? Sometimes it can take 48-72 hours for it to appear. Once I have a bit more information, I can provide you with the next best steps.
