Why isn't my video translation functioning correctly?

Topic summary

Video for bilingual product page shows only the English version; Translate & Adapt links don’t switch the video between English and French. Attempts to use a Shopify-uploaded file and a YouTube link didn’t allow per-language control.

Root cause: Shopify staff confirmed a bug—videos uploaded as files cannot be translated. Only embedded videos (e.g., YouTube) support translation. A Canada-specific Online Store “context” override also blocked expected behavior.

Resolution/workaround:

  • In Online Store Editor, switch to the Canada market context and “Reset to default” to remove market-specific overrides (green diamond indicates an override).
  • Delete any video files uploaded to the store for those sections.
  • Re-add videos as embeds (e.g., YouTube) and then translate them via Translate & Adapt.

Notes: Screenshots illustrate where to reset the market context and identify overrides.

Status: Acknowledged bug with a documented workaround; no permanent fix or timeline provided. Discussion appears resolved pending user applying the steps.

Hello all,

I’m trying to finish the translation of this page https://www.ippsolutionscanada.com/pages/products I have a video for English version in English and for French version in French.

I put links in Translate&Adapt but it doesn’t work, there is only an English-speaking video.

Also, now the video is implemented with Youtube link. I tried to put in Shopify and then select it in the section, I even don’t get an option to change it in Translate&Adapt.

I looked for other articles but haven’t come up with the solution. What problem can be this?

Thank you.

And no answers from Shopify staff…

Hi @Leadlion , we’ll take a look. The forum is a great place to troubleshoot and we monitor it but there ought not be an expectation that Shopify answers each thread here.

Hi @Leadlion , thanks for bringing this to our attention. There is indeed a bug here, it’s not possible to translate videos that have been uploaded as files. Videos can be translated if they are embeds, e.g. from YouTube. There is an additional barrier in the way you currently have things configured in that the video is also uploaded in your Online Store for your Canada context. To resolve:

  • Go to your Canada context in the Online Store Editor and reset to the default context:

  • For all videos you need to translate, delete any uploads and instead embed them - e.g. via YouTube

  • You should then be able to translate fine.

Let us know any problems.

Hello,

Thank you very much for the answer! Could you please specify more where I can reset to the default context, I don’t understand from the screen and can’t find where is it.

Here you go:

The green diamond means something has been adjusted for that context. E.g. in Canada you have changed something vs other countries. The way it works is you have a default context which shows everywhere, then you can override for specific context, i.e. a market (or B2B). You have overrides that you don’t need, so click this button to make Canada go back to the same as default.
