I find that there are many US sessions in the shopify, but can’t find the same in GA4. So why it’s such a great difference? and where these US sessions came from?( It show 'direct‘)But it’s not very detailed. Anyone know about this?
Hi @Maylai_1
Here are some links to some previous discussion explaining about this. I have already found it
https://community.shopify.com/c/shopify-discussions/council-bluffs-visits/m-p/953848#M209517
In short, Shopify uses Google’s tool (likely Lighthouse) to determine Shopify’s speed score, and Google’s data center is in Council Bluffs, Iowa. These session details should be ignored. It would be nice if Shopify automatically ignored these details so as not to pollute user data in the future.
Hope this can helps you ![]()
My US sessions are from Virginia, Ashburn. And didn’t find that much since Mar.14.
Hmm, so think it comes from the Shopify’s analytics. I means Shopify’s analytics may track bot traffic, VPN users, or internal Shopify-related visits, which GA4 might filter out. The “Direct” source usually means there’s no referral data. This could be from users typing the URL manually, clicking on saved bookmarks, or even untracked third-party links.
You can check Online Store > Preferences in Shopify to see if bot filtering is enabled. Then, comparing session data with Google Search Console to identify unexpected traffic sources. If the US traffic seems suspicious, consider enabling geo-blocking or using Cloudflare to filter out unwanted visits
As an app developer, we faced this challenge where there was a lot of bot traffic coming to our customers’ stores. While we do have some bot filtering in place, some bot traffic always manages to sneak through. Google is the main source, it typically visits a few pages, adds a lot of items to cart and sometimes goes to checkout with a “fakemail” email address.
HI Maylai,
Thanks for your query.
THese are the bot traffic from USA. GA4 filtering these traffic as they are not real visitors.
To prevent this kind of session from unusual places like USA virginia install Cloudflare on your website.
which will increase the page speed and verify the bot traffic.
Don’t hesitate if you have any questions.
Thanks
Didn’t find the bot filtering yet.
