Why was my ecommerce store suddenly terminated?

Topic summary

Storefront was terminated without an explanation; support declined to provide details and legal has not responded all day. Over 1k in sales payouts are on hold while orders were already shipped, leading to losses.

The merchant plans to leave the platform and publicize the incident on social media. They are engaging their legal team and filing complaints with an ombudsman and relevant regulators.

A reply outlined common termination causes:

  • Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) violations (prohibited/regulated goods).
  • Payment provider term violations or fraud concerns.
  • Intellectual property infringement.
  • Terms of Service violations (e.g., deceptive practices).
  • High‑risk business models subject to extra scrutiny.

The merchant rejects these explanations, claiming they’ve been ruled out by their team and the ombudsman, and alleges negligence and “theft.” They state they will pursue legal action.

No concrete reason or resolution is provided in the thread. The store and funds remain restricted; outcome pending.

@Shopify_77

My store front on Shopify was terminated today for no apparent reason, support won’t provide a reason at all. Shopify legal haven’t responded all day either. They are currently still holding over 1k in sales payouts and the items have already been sent out causing me losses I just didn’t need to be dealing with, it’s basically robbery on Shopify a part! I will be moving my store front elsewhere as this is completely unacceptable behaviour for an organisation. How much money does Shopify make in just shutting down peoples accounts and holding funds?!! This definitely seems like theft on shopifys part. As an established LTD we are able to cope with this and looking into how to deal with this with our legal team. however I would personally not recommend Shopify to anyone established or starting out as Shopify is capable of terminating your store and holding funds hostage without feeling required to provide any sort explanation as to why. Save yourselves time stress, effort and money and build your site elsewhere. Thank me later. I will also be posting this to our instagram, Facebook and twitter pages in order to spread awareness about shopifys practices.

These are the possible reasons why a Shopify store is terminated:

  1. Violation of Shopify’s Acceptable Use Policy: Shopify has a strict Acceptable Use Policy that prohibits the sale of certain products or services, including illegal goods, regulated products, and counterfeit items. If a store is found to be in violation of this policy, Shopify may terminate the store.

  2. Violation of Payment Provider’s terms: Shopify uses third-party payment providers to process transactions, and these providers have their own terms of service. If a store violates the payment provider’s terms or engages in fraudulent behavior, the payment provider may terminate the store.

  3. Violation of Intellectual Property Rights: If a store sells products that infringe on someone else’s intellectual property rights, such as trademarked or copyrighted items, the store may be terminated.

  4. Violation of Shopify’s Terms of Service: Shopify has a Terms of Service agreement that outlines the rules and guidelines for using the platform. If a store violates any of these terms, such as engaging in deceptive practices, Shopify may terminate the store.

  5. High-risk business practices: Some business types are considered high-risk by payment providers and may be subject to additional scrutiny or termination.

Total nonsense response as every single one has been ruled out by myself and the team and the ombudsman which I why were are pursuing legal. Every response including these will need to be included as an investigation into Shopify aswell as our own findings will also be submitted by our legal team for pursuit and to the ombudsman and any other regulatory governing body that would be relevant. As this represents massive negligence on shopifys side and theft. Rest assured, this will be dealt with as Shopify has acting in a criminal manner.

Once again to all users, We at the luckythirteen re-iterate our previous statement. Thank you.
