Why was my merchant account labeled as high risk?

My business is 7 days old and I received an email yesterday saying im a high risk business and can no longer use shopify payments. This doesnt make any sense. I emailed back right away and its been 24 hours and still no reply.

This needs to be resolved right away and I need answers.

I dont know what I did wrong. does anyone know why and is it normal for this to happen since im new or something? I dont think i have any chargeback as i have 4 customers and I dont see a chargeback listing on my orders

Thank you for reaching out to the community with your concerns. Hopefully I can share some additional insight into this decision.

A high risk business doesn’t necessarily mean that you have a high chargeback rate itself, but that historically speaking the nature of the business itself does. Some examples of high risk businesses I see regularly on Shopify are:

  • Psuedopharmaceuticals (Products that have unverified health claims).
  • Mystery packages.
  • Cryptocurrency
  • Adult content

Without being able to see your online store or review your products, I can’t say why your business was flagged. Were you able to review our Terms of Service for Shopify Payments to see if your business type was included in the section for unsupported businesses? If not, please follow this link and ensure to change the country/region to match your own: Shopify Payments Terms of Service - Prohibited Businesses (USA).

Hmmmm i wonder if my cryptocurrency section is the problem…

I sell computer hardware only, however on my site i have a section for cryptocurrency mining. I dont sell crypto or deal with any crypto.

I sell processors, graphics cards, pre built computers and computer cases.

Do you think removing the text “cryptocurrency” on my site, might unflag my business?

It sucks because its just regular computer hardware but i have text saying that cryptocurrency miners can use it.

I do not sell or deal with any cryptrocurrency at all though. Is this something they will review or am i totally screwed now for having that text on the website.

Im still waiting for a response from cooper from risk team.

It is definitely possible that your hardware was part of the reason for the flag. As noted in our TOS for Shopify Payments, crypto-currency hardware is considered a high risk business.

It may not be the the wording itself though and it could be the actual product, regardless of it’s name. I would recommend replying back to the email from Cooper with those additional questions and to ask if that item is removed from the store, would your access to Shopify Payments be restored. I can’t guarantee that will happen, but it is worth asking them about it.
