Why won't my 3-month $1 subscription process through PayPal?

Every time I try to subscribe to the 3-months-$1/month-Abo, Paypal wont let me. Even though I already have a bank account linked to my Paypal, it asks me to link one. If I do just that, it tells me that I already linked that exact Bankaccount to my Paypal and declines. Somehow that problem only accrues when trying to go for a Shopify-Abo…

Anyone else having the same problem?

Hi, @dRuby .

Using PayPal as your store’s billing payment method requires that your PayPal account meet certain criteria, as listed below:

  1. Credit cards attached to the PayPal account need to have international recurring billing capabilities for the charge to go through. For example, local credit cards that require transactions in local currency will be declined. A workaround for this is that you can also connect your bank account, if supported, or to top-up your PayPal wallet as an alternative PayPal payment method.
  2. In order to pay with the PayPal wallet balance, the PayPal account must be fully verified. Before the account has been verified, you will need to select an associated card/account to pay from.
  3. Although Shopify supports local currency billing for some regions, your store’s billing currency will need to be set to USD in order to use PayPal as your store’s billing payment method. This means that PayPal accounts will be charged in USD, though if the PayPal account is not in USD, PayPal will charge a currency conversion fee ranging between 3-5%, depending on the country.
  4. If you’re based in China, only Chinese Cross Border Merchant accounts (C2 account types) with PayPal will work for Shopify billing. Domestic accounts (CN account types) will not work. All merchants already on our platform should have been migrated to a C2 account, but new merchants can also sign up for one directly via the PayPal website.

If you meet the requirements above but are still having issues with linking your PayPal account, you can further troubleshoot this using the following steps:

  1. Try to access your Shopify admin and link your PayPal account via an incognito window.
  2. Or, you can use your usual browser but to clear the browser’s cookies and cache prior to linking your PayPal account.
  3. You can also try another browser. For example, if you’re using Safari, you can try accessing your Shopify admin on Chrome or Firefox.
  4. If you have access to another device, you can also try to use one, such as a different laptop, computer, mobile or tablet.

Nice to see that you’ve signed up to our $1 plan for the next 3 months! To help you familiarise yourself with the Shopify platform, I recommend following this Shopify Learn guide. It’ll serve as a welcoming tour of the Shopify platform, while also allowing you to set up the most important aspects of your store in no time!

Have you also thought about which subscription plan you’ll choose for your store? The $1/month for 3 months plan will only allow you to choose either the Starter or Basic plans, and if you’re just getting started with your business either of these two options would suit just fine! The main difference is that you won’t have your very own customised online store when using the Starter plan, but if you’re thinking of selling on social media only then the Starter plan is a great option to consider as it will also only cost you $5/month moving forward, once your $1/month plan comes to a close.

What do you plan to sell on your store?

Hi there,
I’m currently living in Germany. I have a bank account but no credit card. Im also over 18 years old. Yet still It won’t let me subscribe. I’ve tried your solutions and sadly, none were working.
Any tips for Germany specific?
With kind regards,
David

Thanks for the update, @dRuby .
