How is refunding to store credit STILL not available? Shopifys last update teased us saying that it would allow refund to store credit, only to find out it only allows Store Credit if the customer originally paid with Store Credit. We need to be able to refund the order value to Store Credit when a customer wishes to exchange an item. Refunding to a Gift Voucher is useless as Shopify treats this as an “exchange” and edits our original Invoice in our accounting system and messes with our Tax’s and bank reconciliations. It needs to be treated as a “refund” not an “exchange” in order for our accounting system to create a credit note.
unfortunately you’re right. currently shopify only supports refunding to store credit if you paid in store credit. better to look at other alternatives and not wait
This is two years old and out of date now, so for anyone landing here from Google:
You can refund to store credit regardless of how the customer originally paid. It’s in the Refund now section of the order, pick store credit as the refund method. You can split it between store credit and the original payment, and set an expiry date. You need to be the store owner or have the “Refund to store credit” permission.
On the accounting part, which was the actual question here: it goes through as a refund on the order rather than an exchange, so it shouldn’t be editing your original invoice the way the gift voucher route did. What I can’t tell you is how your accounting system reads it, because that depends on the integration. If you’re in this thread because of the tax and reconciliation mess, run one order through end to end and check what actually lands in your books before you switch your whole returns process over.
Two other things that catch people out. It only works on Shopify’s new customer accounts, legacy accounts can’t hold store credit at all. And balances are per currency, so a customer refunded in NZD can’t spend that against a USD order.
