Why would the gross sales and payments on the finance summary form be different than the 1099-k?
The Form 1099-K reports only the gross amount of payments you received through Shopify Payments during the calendar year. It’s specifically for transactions processed through Shopify Payments only.
Common differences:
-
If you use other payment methods besides Shopify Payments (like PayPal, third-party gateways, or manual payment methods), those transactions won’t appear on your 1099-K but will show in your finance summary
-
The 1099-K reports gross payments received, while your finance summary may include other metrics like total sales before refunds, or may account for timing differences in when sales were made versus when payments were processed
-
Refunds, chargebacks, and fees are typically handled differently between the two reports
-
The 1099-K follows the calendar year (January 1 - December 31), while your finance summary can be viewed for any date range
If you’re seeing significant discrepancies and need to reconcile these numbers for tax purposes, I’d recommend consulting with a tax professional who can help you understand which figures to use for your specific tax filing situation.
