I am currently using “DEBUT THEME”
I want to duplicate this same theme. If I do this, will I lose all the work I’ve done on my current store? Thank you.
Hey [email removed]lovica!
Cal here from Shopify, thanks for reaching out to us. How are you doing today?
Duplicating your theme is a great idea! It’s always wise to have a back up of a theme before you add apps or custom code, or even simple aesthetic changes. This way, if something breaks, you can always revert back to the previous duplicate of the theme.
We have a great guide on how you can duplicate your theme, step-by-step, here.
Is this your first Shopify store? Have you worked with Debut as a theme before? It is one of my favorite free Shopify themes. We have a separate, detailed breakdown of the capabilities of the theme here. I would pay particular attention to the recommended image sizes detailed in that guide to optimize the aesthetics on your store across multiple devices and browsers!
Thank you. I understand how duplicating a theme works now.
If I were to download the same theme again to use, will I lose all my work?
Thanks so much for your help.
You can download fresh copies of Debut whenever you wish, but they will be absolutely fresh copies! Meaning that any of those new downloaded copies will not carry over any of your work on any of the other themes you have downloaded to your account.
Think of downloading a theme as a clean slate! Whereas duplication keeps all the changes you’ve made to the theme but creates a double of it for backup!
Does that make sense? How is the design going? Is this your first online store?
Hi Cal,
Thank you so much for that explanation. Yes, it certainly does help me. I’m so glad I only duplicated it. I would have cried all day if I lost my work.
Yes, this is my first store and I’m excited! I’m so happy this community forum exists for people who get stuck (like me) lol - Thanks again,
Absolutely! That is what we are here for.
Starting a new store from scratch is indeed super exciting, and there will always be little questions that will need answering along the way. If you haven’t already I recommend taking some time to take our course over on Shopify Compass, which is jam-packed with educational resources about Shopify. It will walk you through the steps of setting up your online store and getting your business up and running.
Let me know if you have any other queries! Best of luck!
Thanks again Cal! I followed the link you sent to me and thanks for that. Looks like I’ll have to go through it later after I get my Gift Card set up in my store. In the meantime, I do have another question? I’ve been struggling like crazy for the past week or so, just trying to place a gift card in my store. The problem I’m having is that the card image doesn’t show up in the products section when I go to review it. I’m beginning to think I may have messed up the gift card template. I followed a tutorial on line that said to remove a line of code and replace it with a line of code (they provided) maybe I didn’t do it right. Anyway, since I know I’ve tried just about everything, my question is: Is it possible to download the Debut Theme and just replace that file and start doing my gift card all over again? I hope I’m not confusing you too much. LOL

Hi again! How are you today?
Yes, if you have performed some action on your theme code that you can’t recover you could install a fresh copy of your theme. Alternatively, if you haven’t entirely deleted the liquid file, you could perform what is called a ‘rollback’ on the code, that is to reinstate it in its original form.
I’ve created a little video here on how you can perform the rollback to reinstate to an earlier version. As you can see in the video, I don’t have any edits on my Gift Card file, but I do have some on my theme liquid file, and you can see the earlier date. Simply switch to the earlier date and click save! This will rever the changes to the liquid file, and means you don’t have to install a new copy of your theme.
If you’re looking to alter the gift card image we have a wonderful guide here on how to do this in the Community forum. If you are uncomfortable with coding, I’d suggest hiring a Shopify Expert to help with installing the image.
Let me know how this goes!
