Will orders work without inventory tracking enabled?

My store is made-to-order, and I always have the raw materials on hand to fulfil orders as they’re received. This means I don’t need to track inventory.

If I don’t enable it, will my orders still work? I just launched my store.

Thanks

@kldmurshed1 you should be able to receive orders without tracking it, but worst case if you face any issues then just go to product back end and set product number to a high value like in stock 9999, so that many orders you will receive without any issues.

No, this should be ok.
Properly fits your case.

Slight disambiguation for future merchants: inventory tracking is not the same as order tracking(e.g. fulfillment tracking numbers) .

I mean will customers be able to place orders if the inventory isn’t enabled? Will they see a “0” or “unavailable” inventory to make a purchase?

Hope that makes sense.

Others have already commented on this.

After that just GO AND LOOK , just make a test order, see what a customer sees END TO END.
Even if we confirm or deny something you still should just do the work and go try it.

I’m new to the Shopify platform, having been an Etsy seller for a long time. In Etsy, inventory quantity is mandatory, but I’m not sure about Shopify.

Also, is there a test order option available on Shopify?

Hi @kldmurshed1 ,

Yes – disabling inventory tracking (Track quantity = off) still lets the product be fully sellable.Shopify treats it as “always in stock” by default, so customers can add to cart, checkout, and place orders without any “out of stock” blocks or Sold Out messages. This is the standard setup for made-to-order, custom, or pre-sale products. For extra safety, make sure “Continue selling when out of stock” is enabled (it’s usually automatic when tracking is off). I recommend placing a quick test order yourself using test mode (Bogus Gateway or Shopify Payments test) to confirm the customer experience is smooth.Bonus tip: If you have multiple made-to-order products that share the same raw material/component (e.g., different designs using the same limited fabric batch), but you still want to keep inventory tracking off on the finished products, our app Raw Materials & BOM Inventory handles it perfectly:Set the shared raw material as a separate (hidden) Shopify product with normal inventory tracking.

Link your made-to-order products to it in the app, defining how much each consumes.

Even with tracking disabled on the finished items, the app validates total raw material usage across the cart/checkout and blocks if stock would be exceeded.

This keeps your products looking “unlimited” to customers while enforcing real limits behind the scenes—no conflicts with your workflow.
