Is there any possibility that Shopify will release its own Shopify wishlist app?
It seems like the only “Core” e-commerce app that is missing now after they released their “Search & discovery” app (Which I think is actually quite good)
Ideally, I would like to stick to native apps made by Shopify, as they are better supported and used by the core themes on the theme store.

Shopify has not officially announced the release of a Shopify wishlist app yet. However, it is important to note that even if Shopify does release a wishlist app, it may not have all the customization features that Shopify Partner apps like Advanced Wishlist by HulkApps offer. That being said, if you prefer to use native apps made by Shopify, you may want to wait and see if they release a wishlist app in the future. In the meantime, you can explore the available third-party wishlist apps and choose the one that best fits your needs.

It is hard to say whether Shopify will develop native app, But now a days many Premium themes have started adding this functionality in their theme code which allows Guest users to create and manage Wishlist. This approach works great for normal stores unless you are looking for detailed reports and other data related to Users wishlist, This theme code embed wishlsit app provide less features and don’t store data permanently anywhere hence can’t show any type of reports to Admin, If Shopify Develop Native wishlsit app then this data will be properly stored and can be used by Store Admin’s.
But from my understanding even if Shopify team develops Wishlist app then too they won’t be able to provide Features, Customise options, Flexibility and Detailed reporting like other Apps on the store provides it.
On top of Competitors features there is one more challenge for Shopify team, this Wishlist feature is directly linked with theme code structure as well. All themes have different code structure and adding Wishlist icons on any dedicated place which can work for all themes is a very big challenge.
But you are absolutely correct, This is very crucial feature for any Ecommerce store so till Shopify team don’t come up with any Native app you can use other apps on the market.

No word from Shopify on this yet. And even if they do build one eventually, it’ll likely be pretty basic at launch - native features usually start simple. Fair point about preferring official features, but in practice a lot of core e-commerce features (reviews, loyalty, subscriptions) ended up staying app-based even after Shopify matured - wishlists seem to be following the same path.
The upside is the app ecosystem has had years to fill that gap properly. Look for one that stores wishlist data reliably, gives you admin-side visibility into what customers are saving, and lets you match the button styling to your theme. Apps like Wishlist Monk are worth checking out - lightweight, works across most themes without needing a developer, and covers the essentials like guest wishlists and back-in-stock emails, all while integrating seamlessly with Shopify flow.
So rather than waiting on Shopify, it’s probably safer to just pick a well-reviewed app now and switch later if Shopify ever ships something native. Hope this helps! 
I heavily doubt it, it’d need to be cross theme compatible and doesn’t feel like it should be a “core” feature among the others. Shopify supplies stuff like cart, checkout, products, collections and leaves the rest to the apps
