You can now ask Shopify Sidekick about your inventory

If you use Shopify Sidekick, it can now answer inventory questions for stores running our app, EZStock (I build it, so read this with that in mind). I wanted to share how it works, since asking Sidekick about stock levels is new and a few people here have asked whether it’s possible.

You open Sidekick from the top of your admin and ask in plain language. The kinds of questions it answers:

  • What should I reorder?
  • What’s running low, and how many days until it sells out?
  • What’s on order right now, and when is it due?
  • What’s the lead time for a given supplier?
  • What does a product cost me?
  • How’s my inventory looking overall?
  • How is stock split across my locations?

The answers come from your own inventory records: reorder points you’ve set, supplier lead times, open purchase orders, recorded costs. Native Sidekick can answer a lot, but it can’t see reorder points or supplier lead times on its own, so those questions used to mean opening the app and reading the dashboard. Now you can ask in the same place you ask everything else.

Two honest limits. It’s read-only, so Sidekick reports the numbers but doesn’t change stock or create a PO for you. And it only answers for stores that have the app installed with their suppliers and reorder points set up, since that’s where the data lives.

Does anyone else is leaning on Sidekick for day-to-day store questions. What have you found it good and bad at?

Hi there @Vlad_Gerasimchuk
The read only restriction is really a beneficial protection for inventory actions. Sidekick is convenient for a quick bit of context, but the quality of the answer at that point depends on how complete and up to date the underlying inventory is. I’d be especially checking reorder points, supplier lead times, and outstanding purchase orders before taking a rec. Getting to pose questions like these in a conversational manner should allow for a speedy routine inventory audit.
