Young Australian beginner needs free help with paw nest pet store & Dawn theme

Hi everyone! I’m a teen from Australia, starting my first drop shipping store called PawNest (pet niche) using the free Dawn theme. I just removed someone who tried to charge hidden fees, so I’m looking for free guidance only — no paid services please!

Could anyone help me with:

  1. Picking good winning pet products
  2. Setting up my store design and collections
  3. Best free marketing tips for beginners

Hi @Yhay_Khan

Since you are already using the Dawn theme, I would suggest going with something simple and choosing one or two categories of products instead of putting too much variety of products at first place.

Here are some useful pointers:

Good Products: Go for those products that solve a problem for pet lovers, like grooming products, travelling stuff, toys for pets, feeding products, etc. Competitors, Tiktok, and Facebook can help you in this regard.

Store Design: Keep your homepage neat. Add a good hero banner, featured product(s), reviews, FAQs, and trust badges. Be organised with your collection (Toys, Grooming, Feeding, Travel, etc.)

Free Marketing: Make short clips of your products for TikTok, Instagram reels, and Pinterest. Post regularly, join some pet-related Facebook groups without spamming and make your own mailing list right away.

I think my major recommendation to you is not to get impatient. Spend some time on making your store look credible.

Hey, welcome to the community and congrats on taking the leap with PawNest! Here’s everything you need to get started, 100% free:

1. Finding Winning Pet Products

Start with research before you commit to anything:

  • DSers + AliExpress (free) - filter by orders + reviews. Look for products with 500+ orders and 4.5★+. Pet categories to explore: interactive feeders, calming beds, grooming tools, travel accessories.
  • Minea / EcomHunt free tier - shows trending dropship products with ad data. Use the free daily reveals to spot what’s performing.
  • TikTok search - type “pet product” or “dog gadget” and sort by recent. If a video has 500K+ views organically, the product has viral potential.
  • Winning product criteria for beginners: solves a visible problem (e.g. slow feeder for gulping dogs), has a “wow factor” on video, isn’t easily found in Woolworths/Kmart, and has a 3x markup potential.

2. Store Design with Dawn

Dawn is actually one of the best free themes for clean, conversion-friendly stores. A few key moves:

  • Homepage: Hero banner → Featured collection (4–6 products) → a short trust section (“Free shipping · Aussie-friendly · 30-day returns”). Keep it simple.
  • Collections to create: New Arrivals, Dogs, Cats, Best Sellers - even if you only have a few products, organized collections look more legit.
  • Product pages: Add at least 4–5 bullet points highlighting benefits (not just features), one lifestyle image alongside the product shot, and a short FAQ section (shipping time, returns). Dawn supports metafields for this natively.
  • Branding tip: Use Canva/ChatGPT free for your logo and banner. Pick 2 colors max - something warm like terracotta + cream reads really well for pet brands.
  • Apps to skip for now - Dawn handles a lot natively. Only add what you truly need (a free review app like Judgeme’s free plan is worth it early).

3. Free Marketing for Beginners

Paid ads aren’t beginner-friendly. Organic is the right move to start:

  • TikTok organic - film yourself unboxing or testing the product with a pet (even a friend’s). No face needed. Trending audio + good hook in the first second = reach. This is genuinely your highest-ROI channel as a teen with no budget.
  • Instagram Reels - repurpose your TikTok content. Tag pet accounts and use niche hashtags (#dogsofinstagram, #petsoftiktok, #australianpets).
  • Reddit & Facebook Groups - join Aussie pet owner groups (search “dog owners Australia” on Facebook). Don’t spam links - engage genuinely, then share your store when relevant.
  • Pinterest - underrated for pet products. Create boards for “cute dog gadgets,” “cat enrichment ideas,” etc. and pin your products with keyword-rich descriptions. Passive traffic over time.
  • Google: Make sure you fill in your Shopify SEO fields (page title + meta description) for every product. Free traffic from search adds up.

Last tip: Don’t try to launch with 20 products. Pick 3-5 hero products, do them really well (great images, solid descriptions, clear shipping info), and market those hard first. You can always expand once you get your first few sales.

 Good luck with PawNest. Feel free to post back once your store is live and the community can give you more specific feedback!

Ellie from BOGOS: Free Gift Bundle Upsell team

Congratulations on getting started! Since you’re using the Dawn theme, you’ve already got a solid foundation.

For products, I’d avoid trying to sell “everything pets.” Instead, focus on one category (for example, cats or dogs) and choose products that solve a clear problem, like slow feeders, grooming tools, car seat covers, or interactive toys. A focused store usually builds more trust than a general pet store.

For your store design, keep it simple:

  • Use a clean hero banner with one clear call-to-action.
  • Organize products into easy-to-browse collections (e.g, toys, Feeding, Grooming, Travel).
  • Add trust badges, FAQs, and clear shipping/return policies.

For free marketing, I’d recommend creating short TikTok, Instagram Reels, and Pinterest content around your products instead of relying on paid ads. Consistently posting helpful or entertaining pet content can drive traffic without spending money.

If you share your store once it’s live, the community can also give you feedback on the design and suggest improvements. Good luck with PawNest!

Hi @Yhay_Khan

Welcome to the community.

Sorry, I will probably be harsh, but you expect too much.

Yes, this is a forum where a lot of people help for free with all kinds of things, like @Hardeep and @Ellie-BOGOS mentioned. But I think you want to sit back and relax and have someone else do the most important work for you.

Can I ask instead what research you did? Have you checked Store Feedback and topics with “no sales”, “zero sales”, thoroughly? Have you seen any YouTube video or course online that says dropshipping is easy, you will earn 40K a week? How much do you plan to invest, and what do you expect as a result, and when? And what will you do if it does not go well for 3-6 months?

Again, I apologize if this is harsh, but you have to hear it. There were a lot of stores that were closed fast, as merchants were not prepared and did not want to invest their own time in learning. And you need to learn constantly: learn, apply, see results, repeat. But you are young; you learn faster and can learn more.

Dropshipping is very hard and requires a lot of work. It is hard because space is so saturated; everyone can open a store, choose some products, a free theme, and boom, a basic store is ready. And think, there could be literally millions of stores that sell the same as you. Same images, same descriptions, similar prices.

So how to be unique enough? Well, a lot of work is needed. For example, you could order 10-20 products, make your own images, or maybe try an AI tool to generate simple but effective images. Same for descriptions. But also, you would get a feel for the product you will sell to other people, so you can be more involved; you know the strengths and weaknesses of the product. Another example: you get some treats or a bed for your dog, and you can see the real reaction. But then use that in a block on the product page: “My dog loves this” or " MY dog is not a fan but he is picky". For every product, but let’s say 5 by 5 at start, give extra content, do extra research. Focus on the customer, but do not forget SEO. And do check this checklist from @Maximus3 Opened a store a week ago - #12 by Maximus3

Also, pick 3 of the best pet stores you know, local or global, one that you know that has loads of orders. Recognise what they are doing right, what sections and blocks look good, what type of content they have, menu structure, navigation. And yes, they might have large teams for different things, but the point is that they did their part in research and tests. So you can be fairly certain what works.

But even if you create a proper store, you still have to do the marketing part. And you need to start networking, both online and in person too. For example, you will not have reviews at the start, but you can fix that by asking friends and family for some orders. And give them a discount, but try to get real reviews from them. For social yes, already mentioned: TikTok and Instagram; make videos every day. Learn how to make, cut, and add effects. Spend a week learning, but then make a new video every day. And at least there are tons of videos you could use.

Do not get discouraged by my post; be patient, work hard, and follow best practices. Be consistent, and customers and orders will come in time. I know you probably will not burn a lot of money on ads, so follow advice and do what you can alone, for free.

Good luck and keep posting here, but on more specific things.

Welcome to Shopify and good job setting clear boundaries after that experience.

For a first pet store, avoid chasing random “winning products.” Start with 1–2 practical products that solve a clear pet-owner problem, are easy to demonstrate, and have enough margin after shipping and refunds.

With Dawn, keep the store simple: clear collections, strong product photos, honest delivery information, visible policies, and one main call to action. For free marketing, focus on short product demonstrations, pet-care content, community engagement, and collecting genuine customer feedback rather than immediately paying for ads.

Which type of pets are you planning to focus on? dogs, cats, or both?

Hi @Yhay_Khan

Dawn is a great choice for your first store. I’d recommend starting with 5–10 problem-solving pet products instead of adding too many. Organize your store into clear collections like Dogs, Cats, Toys, Feeding, and Accessories, and keep your homepage clean with featured products, reviews, and an FAQ section. For free marketing, focus on posting consistently on TikTok, Instagram Reels, and Pinterest, and optimize your product titles and descriptions for SEO. Good luck with PawNest!

G’day @Yhay_Khan,

Great that you’re having a crack at a store!

Get onto Google, sign up for the their keyword account, learn SEO. Then learn how to build your store so it can appear in ai responses.

As an Australian who develops webstores for a living, imagine if you only have customers who expect free services…

There are plenty of YouTube tutorials, and this forum is a goldmine of resources, you just need to search for anything you might need. The ai can also help you… a fair bit, but learning how to ask/prompt is probably also you’ll need to do to get the better answers.

All the best with your store, take your time, learn first, and don’t be discouraged by a bit of effort and the odd setback.

Should you need further help, search first, then ask if you don’t find an answer.

Nathan

Hi [email removed]Yhay_Khan, and welcome! My best tip for getting started is branding related - choose whether you want your products to be the lowest cost or the highest quality. Either is great, but your store can get muddied down and lost if you’re stuck somewhere between the two. Let that decision dictate everything on your store - if low cost, make sure you’re bringing in the lowest cost products and selling everything based on price. If highest quality, let that dictate your visuals and entire brand ethos, and let that carry through from the first impression on the website through to the packaging and customer service.

Thank you so much Hardeep! This is such great advice I really appreciate it.

Could you also help me rebuild my store step‑by‑step using the free Dawn theme? I want to keep it simple with just grooming and travel pet products first.

Could you walk me through:

  1. How to set up my homepage sections (hero banner, featured products, collections)

  2. How to organize my product categories properly

  3. What simple colours/fonts work best for a friendly pet brand

  4. And how to get organic traffic to my store

Hi @Yhay_Khan

Thank you so much! I think Dawn Theme is a good one for you if you want to keep it simple and get going!

As I understand, the topics you listed (homepage design, collections, branding, organic traffic) are quite general and should be considered in detail. It will be hard to describe all this information in one community comment.

I would recommend you begin with structuring your store, creating collections and adding your products and homepage designed with Dawn Sections first. After that, if you face some issues, you can always post a question here.

Hi @Yhay_Khan

If you found my recommendation helpful, I would greatly appreciate it if you could flag this response as the solution.

As you go ahead and build your store, I suggest that you create a new topic in the Shopify Community for each different question or part (homepage, collections, SEO, etc). It makes it easier to address each particular issue accurately.

Hey there! In my opinion you can consider the following things to grow.
With products you can lean more into repeat purchase products like treats, grooming products or poop bags, instead of one-off gadgets. They provide reasons for customers to return.
For collections you could bundle products into things like a “New Puppy Starter Kit” or “Walking Essentials Bundle.” It makes shopping easier and can help increase your average order value.
And lastly for marketing, since you’re just starting, you must spend a couple of weeks building an audience before fully launching. A simple “Coming Soon” page with an email signup, along with regular pet content on TikTok or Instagram, can help you get your first visitors and customers. You could also partner with local groomers, dog walkers, or rescue shelters to get your brand in front of pet owners.

Hi Harddeep,

Thank you so much for your great advice so far it’s really helped me a lot!

Would it be okay if I added you as a collaborator on my Shopify store? That way you can see what I’m working on and guide me through setting up the Dawn theme, products, and collections — without me needing to share any passwords or personal details.

I’ll only give you access to the parts you need to help with, and I can remove access anytime.

Please let me know if that works for you! Thanks again
