Your Shopify store is invisible to 1 in 4 shoppers - here's the 2-minute fix

Roughly 1 in 4 people online use some form of assistive technology to browse the web. Screen readers, which read page content aloud, are among the most common. And when they hit a product image with no alt text, they read nothing - or worse, a meaningless filename like IMG_5923.jpg.

That shopper just hit a dead end in your store.

Working across multiple Shopify client stores, missing alt text on product images was the single most consistent gap I found. Not a few images - entire catalogs. Hundreds of products completely silent to anyone using a screen reader.

The fix takes about 2 minutes to set up.

I built AltMaster specifically for this - it’s completely free. Install it, run it once, and it bulk adds alt text across your entire existing catalog. From that point on, every new product you upload gets alt text added automatically - no manual work, no remembering, nothing falls through the gaps.

Every shopper deserves to actually experience your store. This is the fastest way to make sure they can.

This is a great reminder that accessibility shouldn’t be treated as an afterthought. Many merchants focus on design and SEO but don’t realize that missing alt text also affects the experience for customers using screen readers.

One thing I’d be interested in is whether the app lets merchants review or customize the generated alt text before its applied. For products with multiple images it can be helpful if the descriptions mention different angles, colors, or key features rather than repeating the same text on every image.

If it can generate meaningful product-specific alt text while still giving merchants the option to edit it I think it would be a valuable addition for stores with large catalogs.
