How can I automate tax exclusion for apparel items in Minnesota?

Hi, in Minnesota there isn't any sales tax on apparel items. Clothes, socks, shoes, hats etc. When I add items from my drop shipper I then have to go in and bulk edit ever item and every variable of that item to exclude the tax which is extremally time consuming and tedious.  Is there a way to automate the system to exclude tax based on my state?

Hi, @Sotagirl74.

 

I recommend creating a collection to include all of the apparel items in your store, from which you can then create a tax override for. You can follow the steps below to create a tax override for a specific collection on your store:

 

  1. In your Shopify admin, navigate to Settings > Taxes and duties.
  2. In the countries/region list, click on United States.
  3. Scroll down to the Product overrides heading, then click Add product override.
  4. In the search box, you can then browse for and select your newly created apparel collections.
  5. Under the State heading, select Minnesota, then input 0% within the Tax rate box.
  6. Click the green Add override button to save your selection.

Once that's all done, feel free to create a test order by following the instructions here, so that you can double check whether or not the tax override has been set up properly. If you're using Shopify Payments, follow the instructions listed here instead.

Ah I see, so the system was still charging for taxes on those apparel items for orders in Minnesota, even after you've set up the tax overrides?
