Financing, tax rates, and accounting
Perhaps the biggest shock for our workflow after 20 years of Quickbooks POS is that we cannot do a return by simply putting a negative quantity for an item in the Shopify POS checkout.
We are a neighborhood store with a lot of merchandise that we know came from us, so we don't always require a receipt for returns/exchanges. And we definitely do not collect customer data in a receipt except for in very specific circumstances, because it takes too much time when we are busy, but mostly, people distrust stores that require personal data for in person transactions.
If we don't have the receipt and we don't have the customer's name attached to the original transaction, we will have the problem of having no way to take these returns because we have no way to find the original receipt. Why does the system require we take returns from a receipt at all? I can see how this makes sense for websales, where people have the receipts in an email, but we don't email receipts for in person sales, and I know my customers would
I have found what I hope are temporary workarounds for other basic POS functions that are lacking, but there really is no workaround for this and this is one of the most basic functions for us to give the level of customer service our customers expect.
We don't give refunds without a receipt. If they return and item without a receipt, we allow exchanges or we give them store credit. which has been our system for 20 years. our customers know the system and expect it, and now we have no way to continue that. not continuing will lead to unhappy customers when a simple negative qty option would allow for easy exchanges for them
now I have a more urgent reason to want this - we have no way to take returns for items we sold in QBPOS before the switch
If Orders to not transfer when we transfer data from QBPOS to Shopify POS, how can we take returns on items we sold in QBPOS. Our store has offered 60 days for returns for 20 years so I need a way to offer that for the first 60 days after the switch. I desperately need a solution for this before we switch over.
exactly! My plan (that I think is very flawed and will lead to all sorts of accounting and inventory problems) is to do inventory adjustments after transactions like that, but there is too many ways to do this wrong, so I am not making my salespeople do it. Now I have a new daily task of having to fix inventory on a daily basis when a simple -1 in the receipt would have made everything correct in the system
My idea was to create a store called QBPOS and then duplicate the original sales invoice from QBPOS in that store. This will allow me to return that item at one of my other shops. Anything "purchased" at my QBPOS store could be filtered out for tax and accounting purposes.
Does it work?
A lot of our clients had the same pain point, so we made a small basic app to fix. You add the items that will be returned to your cart as if you were going to sell them, but instead of checking out you tap the app tile and it generates a gift card in the amount of the goods. Works with physical gift cards or e gift cards. It's basic but hopefully it helps! https://apps.shopify.com/return-without-receipt Obviously long term we hope and expect Shopify will offer a native feature here, but as a short term solution maybe this will make life easier 🙂
This doesn't work - I have no tile that says return without receipt. I tried to add a tile, I tried everything to find this magically button. How do I do this in the most recent Shopify update??
Ignore me - I figured it out!
For $39/mo your solution is not feasible for our store. Do you give a discount to nonprofits?
Thanks,
Teresa
