Is committing to Google's ad campaign worth the cost for a newbie?

I've been working with Google reps to get my website advertised on Google. They want me to commit $1400 a month for advertising. I talk to them again on Monday. I'm just starting out, and the fee seems very pricey. I'm new to this. I'm retired and need to supplement my income. I'm not a rich man.  My website is new..it took a lot of work to get it going. I would appreciate some advice on marketing my site, and whether I should commit to the Google ad  campaign or not. It's a dropship camping gear store. See below.
Thank you very much
Edward

Hello @Marinerman44,

Hope you are doing good!

If your website generates a good amount of sales you can afford ads. As you are new to this I recommend don't spend a vast amount on ads. You can check with some other consultants.

In general, organic search is more cost-effective in the long run. If you have an organic search result that gets the same number of clicks as an ad, the organic result will have a better ROI. While you may have spent time on the result, you won't have to pay for clicks, meaning your return is higher per click. By tapping into free sources of traffic, you’ll start generating a good amount of sales on your Shopify store.

I've taken a look at your store and have feedback for improvement.

1. Adding sections like "New Arrivals", and "Hot Sellers" will help keep your customers updated on your store products.
2. The product title is too long. Try to make it short and easily readable.

3. Add a section for product reviews as most of the customers read the review before purchasing the product.

4. You can add testimonials on the home page to make the store look more professional. Testimonials allow your satisfied customers to step forward and address the questions and objections that fill the minds of your prospective buyers for you.
5. Add a FAQ page to provide quick information to help customers make purchasing decisions and reduce the time your employees need to answer simple questions.
6. Add an About Us page which is a reflection of the purpose and personality of the business.
7. Add a section for an email newsletter in the footer to give updates pertaining to your business, products, and services.
8. Adding filters in collection pages helps your visitors narrow in on the specific product they're looking for and find products they might be interested in based on certain features like size, color, category, price, etc.
9. Add average ratings for each product
Including both user ratings and the number of ratings on the products will help users to make a decision whether to buy your product or not.
10. Try to maintain the same image size while listing all products.

11. Make the header sticky
A sticky header allows users to quickly access the navigation, search, and utility-navigation elements without scrolling up to the top of the page.
12. Add Blogging in the store
Blogging is an amazing way to catch user traffic to propel your business forward and increase your SEO. As you add more blogs, the more content the search engines have to crawl and index. This means they can easily recognize that your site is a resource of information for people to access.

I think Google Ads / Google Shopping are the best advertising channel for most stores, especially in the testing phase (seeing if your product / brand can get traction). Unless you have some highly shareable social products then Google Ads typically convert higher than social media ads (in most of the stores I've worked with).

If $1400 is too high you can always start lower then scale up. For example you could start with 1 ad campaign at $5/day, then scale up the spend if you have a positive ROI after a month, and then try the next campaign.

Before you start advertising, I would make sure your site is trustworthy first. Here are some things I would fix:

1) This bug in the header:

2) Get a professional logo designed. This one kind of looks like an edited stock photo to me, but if you want to keep that then I would use a transparent background so you don't have that white fill box around it.

3) Create an About page and spread some brand messaging around your site. Answer this question: "why should I buy from this store instead of shopping on Amazon?". For example, if your products are made in the USA, make some badges and include that wording prominently.

HI Joe,
The white fill box has been deleted and using your suggestion, I got rid of the white border surrounding the logo using a transparent png. Actually, I like the logo's patriotic theme. Yes, I'll add brand messaging. I'm new to this, so that's why I'm on this forum. I appreciate your time and help.

I have never heard of a rep telling you what budget to use. However, in 12+ years in managing Google Ads account, I have long stopped talking to them, as they are just bad at giving advice. I would not use a Google Rep, they are just in it to make you spend more, and they do not care about your business.

I recommend you consult a 3rd party who is not a Google Employee to provide advice. And in fact ask several.

These are all very good suggestions.  However, if you already have some customers coming to your site, you may want to utilize those customers to recommend your products to hundreds of their followers.  If you're interested in learning more, let me know.  Make it a great day!
