Mailchimp embed vs hosted signup forms - what gets more newsletter signups on your website?

I have people sign up via Mailchimp embed form and hosted signup forms - and I cannot work out what term relates to the pop-up and which one is the form on the site.

Anyway, if you use Mailchimp to grow your newsletter list, what really works to drive your customers to sign up? 

I am considering getting rid of the popup as I think it annoys customers.
