I launched my site a month ago and have been using Facebook ads and Adwords to drive traffic to my site, I have spent nearly one thousand dollars on both, yet I only made 10 sales, and the revenue can only cover the advertisement cost and I'm making a loss for every item sold.
The main products Im selling is LED Light Bars for 4x4 offroad vehicles, they are more expensive than eBay generic one but have much better built-quality and brighter performance. My unique selling point is that my products feature real LEDs from reputable manufacturers like CREE, Osram and Phillips Lumileds, my lights are the same as those well-known branded one at brick and mortar stores without those insane markup, and they cost only 1/3 of the retail prices. The main issue is nowadays many ebay sellers claim their products feature "real" LEDs, but in most cases the LEDs their lights have are counterfeit chinese one. My pricing strategy is in the middle ground, they cost $60 - $100 more than cheap ebay ones, but $200 - $300 cheaper than those branded one sold at brick and mortar stores.
Both advertising methods are extremely expensive, Im getting 20-70 visitors each day and my current average CPC for Adwords is $1.41 , FB is $0.71 (though I doubt the number of clicks from FB is correct). 8 out of 10 sales were from Google, and only 2 were from Facebook. So I need cheaper way to drive more traffic to my site.
Do you think I should focus more on offline advertisement instead? something like sending out flyers to Utes and Offroad Vehicles that I see at carparks, hold market stalls.

If you haven't already, I think a great resource is the Shopify Masters podcast - I always find a lot of real, actionable inspiration that covers tactics and strategies Shopify merchants have used to start and grow their businesses.
These methods are free (minus printing costs for flyers), but I think the general idea is that, along with paid advertising (i.e. ads you are already running), it's a good idea to start generating overall awareness for your brand and product, because this type of marketing generally builds on itself over time, creating a snowball effect for your business.

I am new here and have not launched, but I am studying a lot of how to do FB ads. I belong to a few FB ad groups, and have learned ins and outs. Still a way to go. But I know for sure that they say start will $5.00/ day and test test test.
Hi Steven! I wanted to chime in with some additions to Ana's suggestions because my husband is a Jeep/offroad guy and I have a decent amount of insight into that market. (We live in the US, but I'm guessing there's still a decent carryover in how that market thinks.)
I totally agree with Ana about reaching out to influencers. Another place I would look for people to partner with is YouTube. My husband spends a lot of time watching YouTube videos on his breaks at work, and many of them are gear related. You could send some offroad YouTubers some product in exchange for a shoutout. (You could also produce some of your own YouTube videos as well!)
There are also a lot of forums and FB groups for off-road guys, so I'd suggest looking into those as well.
One other little thing that I'd recommend for in-person marketing (like at events) is to get some great stickers made with your logo and website. You can give them out at events, ship them with products, and even give off-road guys a few bucks to stick one on their vehicles. My husband has all the stickers from the brands he likes on one of the cabinets in our garage, and when his buddies come over to work on vehicles, they obviously see those too! (He's a little pickier about what stickers make it onto his rig, but I know there are plenty of other guys in his Jeep clubs that would be happy to rock a sticker in exchange for a bit of cash they can put towards building their rigs!)

I tried Google adword and bing adwords. All i got was a big bill from both places. Not a single sale. I do better without using those places. Facebook ads are very expensive and from talking to people, they say it is a waste of money.
I am still new. Only open 8 months. 95% of my business comes from Amazon. Get a sellers account there
Unless you have a bottomless wallet, using adwords is a waste of money when you are new. Cant keep working in the red.

Saw your post and thought I'd chime in. I'm no rockstar and still struggling to get my biz to profitability but have had some luck on my grass roots (read free) tactics. A few thougts:
1. Target market: You appear to be Australian based but sell anywhere, ya? As an American consumer, if you were to sell to me in the US, I'd want to know that up front. Consider putting US flag and number on your site like you have current Australian flag and number. There might be a low cost option that allows this. Great site by the way.
2. Content marketing: Blog. You have a blog page but no content. Consider creating a content calendar and writting some helpful pieces about lighting and 4x4. Don't be salesy and mention your brand. That is inferred.
3. Social: I don't see any social media icons on your site. Pick a couple/few social channels you can manage and where you believe your target market will be and start curating, posting, engaging. This takes time. Social is critical to building your brand. Consider a course to ramp up if you aren't famliar. I've done some consulting and coaching for companies on this. I'd recommend Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. There's an art to this and it takes a lot of time and learning. You then use your social channels to promote your content marketing efforts.
Used together, you'll generate some unpaid traffic. Hope this helps!

I tried FB ads, but they cost me $0.01 - $0.03 CPA. I think you are not targetting very well with FB ads, as I think using FB ads for startups is much cheaper than Adwords.
I strongly agree that Adwords provide much faster results, as in your case,, but they are surely very expensive.

I would say a good question to ask yourself is: Who is my ideal buyer? Once you answer that, a follow-up would be: Where do they spend their time? (e.g. what sites, what magazines, what forums, what trade papers, etc.)
If your selling point is quality and performance, then you have to reach the people that would care about this. What type of buyer is interested in the name brand stuff, and wouldn't buy the counterfeit? Does anyone depend on a high quality light bar for their profession and would be in trouble if they had a lesser product?
Try to educate your ideal consumer about the difference between counterfeit light products and the real ones. Explain that the cost differential isn't worth the downside of the knock-off product. Try to guest post on enthusiast blogs, and fill your own website blog with it.
While your differentiator may seem strong, most people will not buy a more expensive product unless they feel it's worth it, or understand what they are actually getting.

Doing SEO for your store is the surest way to get cheap traffic. Do not expect Adwords to be cheap though you might be lucky if you have less competitors.

Over the past year I've set a goal only to build my brand and increase awareness. I've tried Google and Bing adwords, Instagram and Facebook. Most of my sales came from FB. This year I'm concentrating on Bing and FB. The main reason is that i can measure and monitor and I’ve come to understand how to use the tools. Here are my steps.
1. Create a FB Page for your store/brand. In your case Gemtek should be the name of your page and take the steps to bring in readers and "Likes" with some FB campaigns. Work to develop and refine your audiences to drive interest to your site.
2. Develop content on how to use your product and utilize the blog pages. The blog can be used as landing pages from posts you created on your new FB page.
3. Install the FB pixel on your Shopify store. This will give you metrics from your campaigns and you can begin to judge effectiveness.
I’ll bet your doing some of this already. Since my products are more seasonal I adjust spend according to the season.
Adwords can be a gold mine, there's just so much too it, it's hard to make it work, but when it does, it can easily pay for itself.
Are all your ads properly tagged up with tracking? That way you'll be able to get some insights out of Google Analytics.
To start getting sales through, you may have to do some free shipping or discounts, but if it's costing you $50 a conversion, but free shipping drops that to $25 a conversion, then (guessing your shipping costs you less than $25), you'll start seeing some more profit. Get the code on the ad, and or there's plenty of promo code "bars" apps that will show your offer at the top of a page.
Can you analyse what ads / keywords / landing pages have driven the sales? If so, focus on them in the meantime on both PPC & SEO
Few SEO things
- your title tag on the home page (and many other pages) are way too long, 55-60 characters only
- your non www. domain doesn't re-direct to the the www. version - you should be able to sort this in your domain control panel but this could lead to google being confused. I think you can immediately resolve this also in Google Search Console
- if your key focus is Australia, you can also set that prefernece in search console, but I'd get it into some of the <title>s and meta descriptions

Ads cost money. While social media outlets such as Facebook can provide some great targeted traffic, be careful what type of ad you are running. Facebook for example does provide different types of ads, some for CPCs and others with CPMs; plus some ads can be run through their auction system, which if you have a limited budget, this could negatively impact.
SEO - SEO is a long-term solution, but beneficial. I am a proponent of content. Everything from blog content, OBLs to partner sites, IBLs from partner sites and other content locations, RSS Feeds off a blog, and every time you post somewhere, provide a signature with your website.
Affiliate Marketing - This is another area I utilize vs. ads. Pay people to send you qualified business. It's simple, if they send you a buyer and they buy, you pay out a small commission, if they don't buy, you got someone who has now visited your site.
Conventional - I know with everyone running a business online, we forget the best and cheapest form of advertising - word of mouth. I cannot tell you how many time when I mention my business, someone asks, "Do you have a card?" I provide a business card and on the back it has a promo code or an offer. I drop cards off at coffee shops, the grocery store, the barber, and so on. We do have more of a life than just sitting behind a computer screen. 🙂

Here's what I would recommend here in Oz for getting virtually free traffic and more importantly sales -
Jump onto the 4x4 and camping forums (often there is a lot of crossover between the two). Some forums let you join as a dealer member where you can actively promote and sell your products. It might take a little while to get yourself known in a particular forum. But if you put your web address in your signature and join in the discussions people will see it. We sell knives and EDC items and had great success with just one forum - the Australian Blade Forum. 4x4 accessories is quite a big market here in Australia (I know having owned 5 4WD vehicles).
Also we have done Group Buys on the forum, where if we can get 10 to 20 people or more at one time to buy a particular item, we offer them a big discount. Some profit is better than none - especially if no sales are happening.
We've also run competitions to get forum members to sign up to get their email addresses and special sales just for the forum members. There's probably a lot of promos you can do for little or no cost there.
As for SEO, we do three things and many of our products are now on first page search results and yes we have had direct sales from Google searches.
1. Shopify's own SEO submission - which is free. Helps if you write good product descriptions.
2. We submit a site map on a weekly basis to Google, Yahoo and Bing. Also free.
3. We use the free app https://apps.shopify.com/seo-image-optimizer to submit Alt-tags for our images. Lots of people search for images as well so it helps to have your images come up high on the search.
We have never used any paid advertising so far, but I guess that will come. I started on a shoestring budget and needed free advertising first.
