What should I do about GA4, tag, and ad issues on my site?

Since Google forced the move away from UA to GA4, my site has been massively having issues.

Conversions that are showing in GA4, do not have values

When I check Google tag manager, it looks like there are 4 tags installed?

My ads are not showing to new customers, let alone actually creating revenue.

My site is www.sweecandy.co.uk

If anyone has any advice or guidance please feel free to share as I am really pulling my hair out.

This has been like this for almost 2 weeks now.

This is an accepted solution.

So the issues have now been resolved.

Our fix was:-

  • Removed all old UA tags
  • Removed all additional historical scripts within the theme area (if you are unsure what this is, please speak to a professional)
  • Deleted the Google and Youtube app
  • Checked on Googletag Manager to make sure that all tags had been removed
  • Reinstalled Google & YouTube app
  • As a pre-caution, we also created a new GA4 property within google analytics so that there where no historical tags causing issues.

After doing all of the above, I can now confirm that everything is running as it should be, with purchase transactions being seen within both GA4 as well as Google-ads, complete with all transaction values.

I had read in a lot of places that there was a need to tag transaction values for GA4 to recognise the correct values, this is not needed, the app does everything you need.

Dear @Heidi2k20

It appears you're encountering several problems after moving from Universal Analytics (UA) to Google Analytics 4 (GA4), so let's address each issue step by step.

1. Conversions without values

In GA4, for conversions to have values, they need to be set up and configured correctly in 'Events'.

Steps to fix:

  1. Log into your GA4 account > Go to 'All Events' section.
  2. Make sure all your conversion events are set up here. If not, create a 'New Event' using the '+ NEW EVENT' button.
  3. For each conversion event, you should select 'MARK AS CONVERSION'.
  4. For conversion events to have values associated with them, you must set up 'Event Parameters'. One of these parameters should be 'Value'.
  5. Make sure 'Value' parameter is properly installed on your website. This can be done using Google Tag Manager.

2. Multiple tags in Google Tag Manager

Google Tag Manager can have multiple tags, but it depends on what those tags are doing. If the tags are identical, then having multiple of the same can cause issues like duplicate counting.

Steps to fix:

  1. Log into your Google Tag Manager account.
  2. Within your container, navigate to 'Tags' section.
  3. Check to see what each of those tags does, and if there are duplicates, consider removing them

3. Ads not showing to new customers and creating revenue

This seems like a Google Ads issue instead of GA4. It could be related to your targeting, ad spend, or ad setup. You should:

  1. Review your Google Ads campaign settings, audience targeting attributes, and ad groups.
  2. Check if the ads are approved and active.
  3. Ensure your daily budget and bid amount are sufficient.
  4. Check your keyword match types and negatives, which might be preventing your ads from showing to new customers.

For all of these issues, I suggest you try these two tools by Google to debug:

  1. Google Tag Assistant: This Google Chrome extension can help to troubleshoot the installation of various Google tags.
  2. GA Debugger: Another Chrome extension to debug Google Analytics tracking code.

I hope that this helps!
