Global expansion, localizing content, and selling in multiple currencies and languages
I'm not sure how to put in a features request - please can someone tell me if this way doesn't work.
I have been looking into how as a small business I can improve the experience for my EU customers of purchasing from myself, post Brexit as a UK business.
Royal Mail have recommended a company called Taxamo assure which acts as a IOSS. They calculate and charge the customer VAT and pay it to the EU on our behalf without us having to fill in the VAT return. They charge £2 for each transaction. It sounds like the perfect solution but unless you are a shopify plus business one cannot get access to the Shopify checkout and do the API integration. The irony is if you are a shopify plus customer you will be big enough and it will be more cost effective to set up your own IOSS.
I have spoken to support about this who have suggested that I put in a feature request. So here it is. If more people can also express an interest in this feature it may have more chance of being implemented and go somewhere to ease the Brexit headache of doing business with the EU.
Solved! Go to the solution
it was the use of the word 'require' that is incorrect - it is optional to use a IOSS
the second incorrect statement is that you state there was no taxes charged on shipments under 150 euros prior to July 1st when in actual fact the threshold was 22 euros up until July 1st - so there was VAT charged on sales under 150 euros.
I would not trust a company who's supposed to be an expert in these matters and has got the above two points wrong. I didn't read any further so I don't know if there were any other incorrect details
I just got this from TAXAMO:
At this moment, there is no integration between Shopify and Taxamo.
Our developer's team is currently working on the integration with Magento; their efforts are concentrated on this and we expect to launch this plugin in the coming weeks. We are aware that other plugins would benefit from a direct integration; you can be reassured that we will let you know when this specific plugin integration will be launched.
Having said that, you can build a custom integration by using the Taxamo API; for that, you would need to avail yourself of the services of a developer of your choice.
- Does this mean it is possible to integrate if we use a developer?? Or is that what was mentioned before: can you only edit API if you are on a shopify plus plan?
Crossborderit looks like it might be the answer for us. We've had a look at the terms of service, which seem onerous which is understandable and had a couple of questions.
1. The Power of Attorney (appendix 3) is a strong legal document please this will only relate to EU customs duty and tax payments and has no authority over UK VAT etc.
2. In the event of cancellation (5.1) it seems reasonable that CBIT has the right to invoice for services rendered but what does the 100% cancellation fee mean? 100% of what?
Thanks for your help.
Not sure why but DPD is already requesting the number for european sales for certain countries over the last couple of days.
We have signed up with crossborder and have our IOSS number and have been able to enter it.
My only issue is why is it a requirement by DPD already and now that I used the number how do I notify crossborder as they have not been touch for any payment or how to upload spreadsheet.
The actual sale was on Amazon but still needed a number to process as Amazon not issued theirs yet.
How soon after receiving the IOSS number does a company have access to payment and uploading shipments into your system?
We've received our IOSS number but have no instructions on how to implement orders and make the relevant payments through your site.
In addition from Taxamo:
We appreciate that Shopify is one of the main platforms out there, our developers need to concentrate on the Magento integration at the moment.
We have noted your interest in the Shopify plugin, and again you can be reassured that we have noted your interest and we will contact you when the Shopify plugin has been created.
We do not know yet when this will be taken into consideration; it will be a business decision to see which will be the next platform to be taken into consideration.
You can build a custom integration by using the Taxamo API; for that, you would need to avail yourself of the services of a developer of your choice.
As Taxamo created the Assure product as a self-service model, we are happy to share with you all material available, including our developer guide, FAQs, and API reference.

Is the 19.99 a month required? I wanted to use taxamo because it didnt look like there was any monthly fee just a fee for each parcel. I dont know how much i will sell to eu each month and for small business like me 19.99 is quite alot if i dont end up sending a lot one month.
We have worked through the Taxamo API connection for both Plus and non-Plus stores across 4 our EU Plus stores. It's pretty complex but doable if you have a good developer that supports Shopify. It's kind of crazy that Taxamo chose to support Magento and *not* Shopify!
I might be able to provide the API configuration as service to other stores but I don't see us going through a formal App process. Also, we could probably set up CBIT too but haven't looked at it yet. Damon let me know if you want to chat about help with your API (you've chatted with several of my eCom friends this week but we were already deep into the Taxamo rabbit-hole!)

Hi Kevin, so are you saying that it is possible for a developer to access the cart to make the necessary adjustments for Taxamo even if you aren’t on Shopify Plus?
Thanks
Hi,
Have received the email with instructions, but I don't see the "Upload" tab in my Crossborderit CBIT account? Is anyone else having this issue or is it not quite live yet?
A quick update in case others are having the same issue...
We have an IOSS number from CrossBorderIT and I logged in to Shopify to try and update the tax settings to account for it.
I was following this information from Shopify help but we do not have these settings.
I had a long discussion with Shopify support, including setting up a new shipping zone called European Union but our Tax regions only show a full list of countries rather than the shipping zones and specifically not one for European Union. I asked if we needed to set up Registration Based Taxes and the support agent couldn't say if that would fix the issue. We decided to go ahead with that but I am still waiting for an email to allow us to make that change as I am not the store owner.
I will update as I make progress through the process!!
After uploading the CSV file we receive the error saying 'Source Country must be outside EU'. The inputted source country is GB which is outside the EU..
If you would offer that service in the near future of connecting Taxamo for non-plus stores, I would be interested to hear about it.
I am only a small business, like a lot of us here and it would make a big difference to not commit to monthly fees and Taxome seemed like a very good alternative for that.
Hi
We’re a UK business exporting snacking items to the EU.
We would like to register under IOSS via you as an intermediary to provide our customers with a seamless experience when ordering from the EU.
Please can you give me a quick call to discuss how this will work as I have a few questions before signing up.
Thanks,
Pri
Hi there
I just saw your comment about the crossborder it solution and whether it factors into account different vat rates for different countries, as vat isnt due in some countries and some goods have reduced vat rates. Is this all factored into account with the tax calculator provided by shopify or crossborder?
Thanks,
Pri
