Learn more about managing your payments while running your Shopify store in the UK.

This thread is part of the Regional Support threads offered for merchants in the United Kingdom. To see which other topics are available, you can visit the UK hub here.

Shopify Payments is available for businesses that operate in the United Kingdom and can be used to accept payments made by customers with Visa, Mastercard, and American Express debit and credit cards.

The cost of using Shopify Payments is dependent on which subscription plan you have chosen, with higher plans offering lower credit card processing rates. A full breakdown of these fees can be found on our pricing page.

To receive payouts, merchants will need to connect an account that:

  • Accepts payments in GBP currency
  • Is provided by a physical bank in the United Kingdom
  • Is eligible for FPS transfers

Some types of businesses and services are not permitted to use Shopify Payments. Prior to signing up, review our list of prohibited businesses to confirm whether your business is eligible.

If you do not believe your business is eligible, or if you want to check alternative options, you can view the full list of integrated payment gateways for merchants in the United Kingdom. Orders processed via third-party payment gateways are subject to transaction fees, unless you have these gateways activated alongside Shopify Payments as your primary gateway.

If you have a question or comment to make about processing payments on Shopify in the United Kingdom, please post it below.

Hi @Zackspalace,

Thank you for getting in touch and I am sorry to hear about the tough times you have been through of late. I would recommend reaching out to our support team, as they will be able to authenticate you on the store and take a look at your current billing situation and store status. You can explain your situation to them and they will be able to guide on what's possible moving forward.

Kind regards,

Hi @Dilan_Patel

Thank you for getting in touch. Are you trying to set up Shopify Payments for the first time, or are you changing the bank account you have on file? Are you trying to connect a current account to Shopify Payments, or is it a different type of account?

Kind regards,

Victor | Shopify Social Care

Hi @Dilan_Patel,

Okay, thank you. Can you tell me if you're trying add the details of a current (or chequing) account held with a UK banking institution, that allows for international charges?

Kind regards,

Hi @Dilan_Patel,

Okay, I see. It sounds like you are trying to add a supported bank account so I think this will need to be looked at more closely. Please contact our support team so you can be authenticated on the store, and the issue with your Shopify Payments account can be reviewed directly.

Kind regards,

Hi @Dilan_Patel,

When you visit the support page, you first need to log into your store:

21-03-par7u-0pg2a

After you've logged in, you then need to enter in a topic or question. You can enter in something like "Shopify Payments bank account" before choosing the option to contact support at the bottom of the page:

21-03-0fk8i-rhmzd

Once you've clicked here, you'll see the different options available to you:

21-03-6ye64-wf84l

As you've logged into your store at the start of this process, you should be pre-authenticated when you speak to a member of our support team and they'll be able to take a closer look at your store and this issue than I can.

I hope this explains things, but please let me know if you're still having issues.

Kind regards,

I already have a merchant account with Braintree, which includes 3D secure. However, on setting up the credentials in Shopify, it says I still need Cardinal 3D secure which is a lot of extra cost and delay. Is there any workaround?

I guess the alternative is Shopify payments, which will also cause delay to get setup.

Any insights appreciated!

Hi @NickWhite,

Thank you for getting in touch with your question. Can you tell me if you are able to proceed with activating the Braintree gateway without also entering in any Cardinal credentials, or can you not proceed until you do so?

Kind regards,

Hi Victor

It does appear to have activated, but has a message at the top: "You must enter your Cardinal 3D Secure credentials below to comply with European PSD2 regulations. Learn more about setting up 3D Secure with Cardinal"

And a checkbox to enable 3D Secure with Cardinal at the bottom of the page.

Can I just ignore it?

Thanks in advance.

Nick

Hi @NickWhite,

Okay, great. If you are confident you have 3D Secure enabled via the Braintree gateway and are therefore PSD2-complaint, then you should be able to proceed without enabling Cardinal. If you experience any issues when processing transactions through the gateway please let us know.

Kind regards,

@Victor Hi, I need help on adding Stripe to our Shopify store. I don't see option of Stripe to be added from even on third party payment providers, i see defaulty only shopify payments, Please help on how to connect the Stripe account?

Hi @gregj,

If you are in a country where Shopify Payments is available, you will not be able to use Stripe instead, as the Shopify Payments gateway is powered by Stripe. If you are eligible to use Shopify Payments I would recommend using it as you will not be required to pay transaction fees, which you would otherwise be due to pay when accepting payments via third-party gateways. There are also features only offered via Shopify Payments (e.g. accepting payments in multiple currencies), so I would recommend considering it if you are able to.

Kind regards,

This, like all Shopify info is vague and unclear. In particular you and other info on the site suggests that, if you use a 3rd party payment vehicle (in my case Sagepay) then I will be charged a transaction fee plus a surcharge, however if I convert to Shopify’s own then I still get charged the transaction fee in any case? If I use Sagepay, am the getting charged the transaction fee, which is horrendous, plus a surcharge and still being charged my own portal fee and my merchants fees on top? Thanks,

How long did it take to apply for Braintree for payments? What documents do you need? Do I have any American or British companies to apply for it
