Storefront API - Bring Your Own Stripe Account

My US-based company has a Shopify setup for which Shopify Payments is currently in use.

However, we also have a Stripe account that is entirely distinct from the Shopify setup.

We'd like to issue payments on checkout entities via the Storefront API, using stored payment methods in our external Stripe account.

Is this possible?

Some prior research has indicated that
1.) we'd need to be set up as a Shopify platform (which doesn't really fit our use case), and
2.) this feature is not available in regions for which Shopify Payments is available, such as ours.

However, we were able to find a form through which special payment processing permission can evidently be granted.

This gives us some hope, but to date our form submissions haven't been followed up on, and support & Shopify Gurus have not been able to address our request directly.

Has anyone else gotten anywhere with this sort of implementation?
