Why can't I manually mark orders as fulfilled on my online store?

If we manually despatch an order outside of the warehouse that is integrated into our store, Shopify no longer shows the option to manually mark an order as fulfilled, we only have the option to request fulfilment from the warehouse that is integrated to the store, irrespective of whether they have shipped the item or not.

We do not want to add multiple warehouses to the store due to the heightened risk of split shipments, and it's only in rare instances that we require this to be done.

If a product for an order cannot be fulfilled by the warehouse, and we need to send it from an alternative location, we do this manually outside of the store, but then need to mark the order as fulfilled within Shopify. However, the store now only prompts us to request fulfillment from the warehouse partner, or cancel the order, which we don't want to do.

This only appears to have happened since moving to the fulfilment order API.

Has anyone else run into a similar issue but been able to resolve it?

The way I've seen people resolve this is by changing the location of the fulfillment order.

1. Click on the 3 dots in the fulfillment order, on the order details page

2. Select change location

3. Change to a location that you control

If you don't see the new location available, go to that product's page and add the location to the list.

If you're afraid of that location getting assigned orders, you can configure your order routing settings (in Shopify Settings) to make sure your other location gets priority always.

If you're getting a lot of orders that need location changed, or you want more granular control over order routing, you can use Order Automator to automate that process based on rules, or by processing orders in bulk (by day, or week, etc).

We are only able to change the location of the order if we have a secondary location set up in the store, which currently we do not have through risk of increase in split shipments.

Even by adding the alternative location and setting as the secondary priority warehouse, we run the risk of orders splitting where we have inventory for a specific product in one site and not the other, coupled with other products in customer orders.

Will take a look at the order automator! Would be great to see the previous feature available where can manually mark orders as fulfilled within Shopify directly, instead of only being presented with the option to hold, cancel or request fulfilment.

Yeah a 2nd location would be necessary to fulfill from a different location. The way Shopify works they require a location to fulfill an item.

You can use an app, or possibly Shopify order routing settings to eliminate risk of orders going to locations you don't want to.
