Why is physical product fulfillment marked as complete prematurely?

We sell both digital and physical items within the same product listing, utilizing variants. Recently we noticed a change in how Shopify treats the physical product fulfillment - it marks the order as fulfilled despite the fact that we need a week or more to ship it out. This didn’t used to happen and as a result, we are having to thoroughly inspect every order line by line to ensure we don’t miss any that need to be fulfilled. We now have to manually cancel the fulfillment and then if digital items were requested in the same order, we manually mark those as fulfilled, leaving only the physical items as unfulfilled. 

We double checked our settings for physical items and all seems to be in order. This began happening within the last week or so.

 

Any ideas as to why and when we can expect it to be resolved?
