Block Discount Extensions Like Honey

Hi all,

Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but has anyone figured out a way to block apps like Honey from automatically scraping and/or applying discounts? It's become a big problem for us recently, and I can't seem to find anything via Google about how one could block something like this.

Thanks!

Jay

Unfortunately there's no oneshot fix for this, while it would be nice to hope such services would be required to only use sites that have opted in not likely going to ever happen.

Since opt-in only is anathema to such business models, practically there are way too many companies that benefit from tools such as honey, or similar such as ad-blockers.

A better tactic may be getting them to provide a clear way for you to clearly indicate which coupons are allowed for sharing.

Similar to how for SEO google et al respect the robots.txt file.

Also really make sure you cannot turn this to your advantage such as setting up automation to not-fulfill such orders, informing them with the proper messaging and getting these prospect to to take an action that's beneficial to you(such as tweeting) , etc.

Such as leaning into it , similar to what @TrueGrit did, such as making positive messaging(twitter hashtags, heyhoneyfindusonfbforbiggerdeals, etc) , or making ridiculously bad discounts to make needles in haystacks( $0.01 off $1000 order, etc)

Hi guys!

I am currently working on an investigation into browser extensions which exploit affiliate attribution and damage margins for small ecommerce owners. If you're interested in sharing your story, I would love to hear from you!

Please private message me here so we can talk via email. I have a large audience, and plan to make a lot of noise on this issue.

Thanks

Hi,

I have spent a lot of time (an embarrassing amount of time) thinking about discounts and discount extensions, and how to solve the issues stores commonly face against coupon leakers that likely brought you here in the first place. Like many others here, I too have an app designed to help with this.

As you can tell - this thread is now 4.5 years old and still getting responses.  Why? I'd say this is because this is an incredibly "hairy" problem and difficult to solve.

Free tip: Honey can be dealt with pretty much instantly by emailing them at partners@joinhoney.com. Just make sure to email them from an email address that uses your store's domain. They will try to get you to give them an exclusive code like "Honey15". This might be useful for measuring the percentage of your audience that uses the Honey extension - though the code often spreads to other (but not all) discount extensions as well, making the data hard to understand. If you persist - they will delist your store completely from Honey.

Other extensions tend to be trickier.
