Re: How to remove express checkout buttons?

How can I delete express checkout buttons from my website?

Can anybody tell me how to remove these delightfull express checkout buttons that are causing 50% of my customers to leave my website without completing their order?
These buttons are mistakenly causing my customers to believe that these are the only payment options offered by my website.
Can anybody advice on a piece of coding to remove them? These express checkout buttons only seem to be visible inside the cart section (see below screenshot), but I have heard that sometimes there  are also visible on the product page. I just want to delete them from my website entirely.

I tried looking at older posts but none of that code seems to work anymore as shopify has updated it.

Emiliyan,  you cannot remove Express Checkout as Shopify does not allow us to do so.   There is one app I know of that helps as it removes when it is a first time customer and the address is not auto filled.  Here is the app:

Not a bad move Ben31.  Would help some that are confused by the express checkout as that is a lot of feedback from customers.   I just want it gone completely and should be able to control my own website's checkout.  I will continue to demand we be able to remove it.

@Emiliyan @bryan76 Depending on your Shopify plan (I think), you should be able to turn-off the Express checkout buttons without an app.

However, this will stop visitors from using Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay etc on your store. If this is what you want, I believe you can go...

  1. Settings > Payments > Manage
  2. Uncheck apple pay, google pay and shop pay
  3. Save

express-checkout-off.png

Of course on our store, we want people to be able to check-out using these methods, hence the problem for us. But if you just want to remove the Express checkout options, follow the above steps.

Maybe that helps. Cheers, Ben

We want to accept those types of payments but do not want the express checkout box on either the cart or customer page.  I only want PayPal, Apple, etc to show up at the very end of checkout in the same area as credit cards.

We know how to activate different types of payments

I fully understand which is why I’ve made several feature requests and provided different workarounds above, depending on what people want.

The reason those pay buttons go first, is because checkout takes place on the payment platform, the user doesn’t enter address details etc.

In order to have both, we actually need all payment options to go first. This is because which ever option the visitor selects, determines what happens next.

However, this will never happen because it seems credit card companies require the address details to be submitted - that’s why with CC payments, the address info is collected first before the CC is submitted - a problem with multi-page checkouts.

However, splitting payment options across multiple pages creates endless customer confusion, something I’ve argued endlessly with Shopify about.

The reason why Shopify is doing nothing, is because a new checkout system, complete with customisation, is rolling-out at the end of the year.

We’ve decided to simply minimise the effects using the ideas above until the new check-out is released.

Yes, it’s less than ideal but that’s the deal as far as we understand things. YMMV.

Cheers, Ben

If Shopify is in the process of releasing improvements, they need to provide a workaround while we wait. Store owners are losing customers and sales over this that we may never get back. That's the biggest problem. For Shopify to say "Improvements on the way, good luck in the meantime" is unacceptable from a business standpoint.

My GOD, Shopify. This is such an easy fix.

I also get tons of complaints from customers in the Netherlands and Germany that they are unable to check out, in their perception of course.

We want to disable Express Checkout for specific countries, but still have those payment methods available later in the process. That simple!

Agreed. They are trying to push everyone to use their paypal, shop, google, etc payment buttons because they are probably partnering with them somehow in the background. It crosses a line for me because this is MY business and I should be able to run it how I want.

Wanted to leave another reply here as we've been in contact with Shopify as well on this and actually got c-level involved.

Here's the update we received, which is similar to what Ben31 posted:

1. They're aware of the issue and working on improving the UI to avoid confusion, on the roadmap as we speak.
2. You will (probably) be able to hide certain express options (i.e. Paypal) to avoid customers choosing expensive options unnecessarily.

We're quite happy that they're working on it, ofc even better if we had a short-term fix as well.

I appreciate your reply.

The reason I'm doubtful is because I have been seeing related posts on this topic where users have stated 'Shopify is working on it' as far back as pre-2020. This post began in September 2021. It's discouraging to say the least.

You can hide express checkout options using the BeSure Checkout Rules app.

You can create a rule to hide express checkout options. It mainly works for new customers, they won't see the express checkout options. Repeating customers with auto address fill, will see express checkout options. But usually when address is auto filled, checkout will skip the information page and directly goto to shipping page on the checkout. So, it works out well.

Hi Sam, thank you for this, this does work but not 100%, it will only work for new sessions and any existing visitors will still see the express checkout, Shopify really need to release this option.

Hi Michael,

It seems like since mid of 2022,  the liquid / CSS code to hide the express checkout button does not work anymore. To hide the express checkout payment method, you will need an app that utilize Shopify Functions. (this a way for an app to communicate to Shopify to hide certain payment methods directly)

I have made an app to hide the Paypal Express (and other express checkout method like Apple Pay, Google Pay etc) on the top part of checkout page, and customer can still select Paypal method at the payment step.

soulchild37_0-1692261470152.gif

The app is made using native Shopify Functions, thus it does not affect your store existing layout or functionality at all.

The app name is Yagi Express Payment Hider (https://apps.shopify.com/yagi-express-payment-hider)

The app also have a workaround which you can hide the express checkout buttons for returning customers with saved address, but you will need to create a placeholder shipping rate for it to work, this will also work with one-page checkout.

Hope this can help!

Regards,

Axel Kee

Spent too much support time dealing with order cancellation request from customer? Wouldn't it be good if customer can cancel order on their own without bugging your support? Try out Cancellable app! https://apps.shopify.com/cancellable . I also write articles about store customization that can improve your customer shopping experience here : Yagi Software Blog

Thanks for your engagement. This is the best solution so far. The Shopify Customer Support couldn't be worse, with the sight of how long this feature was wanted.

YES! THIS WORKED ^
Forget all the other things which no longer work or replies which are irrelevent. This worked. I could hide the broken/misleading 'express payment' buttons and instead guide the buyer to scroll down and checkout normally.
After weeks of frustration, where Express checkout buttons always resulted in a failed payment, but standard scrolling down and selecting the same provider on shopify checkout always worked - leading to me wanting to hide the express buttons altogether rather than lose 99% of sales - this worked.
Its madness that Shopify is fully aware of this issue and does nothing.

Hello,

It seams like your app is the best solution for this right now.

A question, du you have the option to hide the express checkout for different markets? For my example I would like to hide it for the Swedish market but have I available for the US market etc.

also does it work with the new 1 page checkout?

Looking forward to your reply,

Thanks

I'm new to shopify and this "problem" does not reassure me shopify cares whatsoever about what their customers want. This is an obvious problem they appear to be dead set on not doing anything about (for years). So easy to fix too. I think they hate their customers. Time to look elsewhere.

I recently switched to the one page checkout that Shopify released and it has made an improvement. It helps for customers to see the payment option lower on the page instead of on a completely different page. It's not a solution but does help.

If you don't have the one page checkout, go into your Shopify settings>checkout, there should be an option to switch to the new one page checkout.

If not, I have a way to 'force' with code..let me know if you need it.

what do you mean "force the code" ?   what does it do exactly and how do where do we adjust code to effect checkout functions?

SULgear

I didn't see any option for one page checkout. How would you force it?

My work around at the moment is to simply not accept any payment method that appears in the express checkout. That sucks, but is far less confusing and leads to less abandoned carts than people thinking you only accept paypal, venmo, or whatever else shows up in the express checkout. Why shopify can't spend all of 5 minutes coding an option to show or hide the express checkout is beyond me, especially since this has been an issue for years. It's actually quite unbelievable. As someone new to shopify, this does not instill much confidence that they listen to their customers needs. However, coming from big commerce, I like shopify much better, but I'm left uneasy by their ignoring a glaring issue that would be childs play to address.

Well that isn't a solution at all since we want to accept PayPay etc. and we all know that we can simply not offer it.  We just don't want it on the information page.

They checkout had major security issues so they took the ability for users to edit checkout.liquid in order to make sure the site was secure.   Yet the facts is Shopify wants users to use Express Checkout and in particular sing up for Shop Pay.

There are some interesting solutions / work arounds on this thread.  I use BeSure Checkout Rules on one of my stores as I wanted to rearange the options on the final payout page and the solution to hide the express payout (some of the time) was an added bonus.

One of my store's automatically changed to One Page checkout and I am just looking into how this now operates.

so, this is all that was required for us to finally get past the very expensive paywall to customization? ... I hope it works, and I hope it lasts.

Hey guys,

Is there anything new on this topic?
I actually thought it was just me who was having a hard time with this issue... I consider it to be quite essential to be able to simply choose whether I want it or not. If nothing has been done about it yet, I don't understand it at all 😞

bryan76
Trailblazer
231 4 47

besides the one page checkout there may not be any developments.  I agree that it is my store and I should have control yet chechout.liquid cannot be accessed unless you are on plus as there are security issues if they allow you to make changes to the code.

I think this thread gives most work arounds that exist.  pick your poison

Hey Bryan,

thanks for letting me know. And exactly, I'm pretty annoyed about that 😕

But I just check one store from my country which runs also on Shopify- tried to make checkout and this option is hidden, so maybe its made by the app or something. I also contacted support for solution (and show them that page). So I will let you know if I find out something helpful.

The Be Sure checkout app I posted above will hide it some of the time.  I am in contact with the app developer Sam (also on this thread) and he is always making improvements to the app.  I also use it to rearrange the order of the payment methods at the final and screen of checkout as I make a Request a Quote option that I want to be first.   It was only then that I realized he was working on hiding the express checkout as well so I use it for both.   I just have the app on the store, set it up and at that point hope for the best when a customer goes to checkout.   try not to let it bother me.

Ok so I understand that is not only for hiding express payments and it has some more useful features right?
Are you using the PRO version?

Also want to ask you if I should consider the Yagi express payment hider if you heard about it?

I needed advice from someone who deals with this topic and has a functional e-shop, so I'm glad I found you here 🤗

I do use the other features and am on Pro.  actually been using this app to rearrange the order of the payment options since before the express payment feature was added but also use to block PO Boxes and other addresses which was a big problem for me

I have an update on the one-page checkout issue for anyone still experiencing this problem. I stumbled across a Shopify theme that actually has the option to go back to the three page checkout. It's called Yuva. I haven't looked to see if this is an option for other themes. I hope this helps!

Hi, for me it worked to remove the ticks from payments: settings--> payments-->manage--> removed all the ticks from payments that don't interest me, such as gpay, shoppay, apple. for paypal you have to deactivate it.

bryan76

that removes those payments from your site completely.  that's not what this thread is about as that is obvious.  the goal is to have those payment options but not express checkout

Thank you, I deleted these as payments also. Shopify is about to put my small business OUT OF BUSINESS because of this. I had 36 people drop off at the checkout! I’m beyond angry to learn this is an issue with others and they’ve done nothing to fix it when they could easily add it in the settings and payments. Should not have to download a 3rd party app which will make my website even slower than it is. The free Shopify theme won’t let it delete it (I went to school for coding and know how to take it out myself that’s not an issue, it just won’t let me save it) I expect a selling platform like Shopify maximize conversions for me! I didn’t except this or I would have just set up my own wordpress website. I use Shopify cuz it connects with everything easily and I’m managing like 3 of my own LLCs right now (I also rent on turo and dog sit to try and make enough money for this business which Shopify is trying to sabbaoge apparently! ). This should make my life easier not make me mad! I feel blind sided right now you have no idea Shopify the crazy year I’ve had and then to almost lose it all because of your express checkout, which luckily I was smart enough to realize was the issue because I build systems for my career, praying others figure this out as easily as I did. We pay a lot of money monthly for this. I got laid off my job over a year ago and can’t find work in tech industry as more layoffs happen every month for over a year. So this is all I have & after a years worth of work and thousands I have in personal savings spent on google ads to then be rekt by express checkout is beyond unacceptable. DO BETTER SHOPIFY! It’s crazy I can’t edit /move it down lower. Now its not a payment option, but even so - I’ll have way more sales without it.

After seeing all the comments, you’ve lost people thousands of dollars if not hundreds of thousand’s, this is gross negligence. Fix your platform Shopify.

it's really not that big of a deal.  unless 36 customers don't know how to pay for an item online this was most likely not the reason they didn't complete the purchase.  with one page checkout they scroll down a tiny bit and see where to enter a credit card.   this in no way hinders a person's ability to pay for an item but I do understand why some. including myself, might not like it.   fyi apps like that use an API and do not slow down your site at all and you will not find them listed on google's page speed insights report.  Shopify removed access to checkout.liquid for very serious security reasons

It’s a huge deal if people only think there’s only the express checkout options and multiple business owners on this thread are losing revenue because of this issue. On desktop they may be able to realize to scroll down and realize, but on mobile ( where most of my customers are coming from) it looks like those are the only options to pay with, so people click out of the page to not deal with it and don’t finish the checkout. I noticed it right away when I went to investigate what the issue was, then immediately found this thread. This issue needs to be fixed.

we know and that's why this thread exists and why we are here giving the best options.  we are store owners as well, not Shopify employees that have any say in the matter.  I guess for retail impulse buying it would make more of a difference yet I run stores that are either larger purchases or important b2b items in which they will figure out as it's important to them to get the products.
