Hi guys,

My current theme is Brooklyn. I have added some code to this theme and added products etc. to the Brooklyn store theme.

Now I want to change to Debut theme but I don't want to have to edit the debut theme again and add products again etc. How do I transfer everything on my brooklyn theme to the debut theme without losing any previous customisation. Thank you very much.

Harry

Hi @harryarkwright1,

Nick here from Shopify. Really good questions!

If you have made code edits to a specific theme for example Brooklyn and then change theme to Debut then you would need to make the same code changes again in the new theme as you can only change the code in one theme at a time. In this scenario, unless Debut has the fuincionality for the feature your looking for, you would need to edit the code again. Your products and pages and other aspects like that would stay, but for specific custom theme edits, you would need to change them again.

Can I ask you what code changes you made to Brooklyn? Our theme support team does have a free 60 minute design time for smaller athestic changes to your themes which you could look into if you have not done so already here. If it is quite a custom change, your best next step would be to talk to a Shopify Expert if you feel you need to or aren't comfortable making the changes yourself.

So while all your copy, pages, products, orders will transfer over and remain the same, the customisations to the theme, will need to be applied again. I hope this helps, but please don't hesitate to ask if you have any other questions about this!

Hi Nick,

Thanks for the help.

How do I change from Brooklyn to Debut without losing customisation ( forgetting about the code for now ) ?

Thanks.

Hi @harryarkwright1,

To change your primary theme, you need to add the theme to your store via the theme store. Once you log in and either purchase or add a free theme, it will go to your theme library in your admin.

Online Store > Themes > Theme Library where it will list all the themes you've added to your store. From there you can edit and work on the new theme while your current theme is still active so there is no downtime between the change and you can wait until you're completely ready to switch over. When you're ready to switch over, you will hover over the Action button and select Publish to add the new theme to your store which will then be live.

Are there any other themes other than Debut which have caught your eye or you could be interested in also or are you set on Debut?

Hi Nick,

Thanks for that.

Also I would like the Debut theme search bar for my Brooklyn theme. I assume this will just mean copying code from debut and pasting to brooklyn. Could you tell me how?

Thanks

Hi @harryarkwright1,

The theme coding wouldn't work like that exactly. Each theme is developed and written for it's own specifications and it could look off. There are a lot of other moving parts to this also mainly CSS and JavaScript.

Is it just the style of the search bar you want to have or to have the search bar in general?

An app from the Shopify App store could be worth looking into as a possible alternative for you here. I've linked some of my favourite search apps below:

Do you feel an app could work for you here?

It could also be worth reaching out to our theme support team and use your 60 minute free design time if you haven't already as you are using a Shopify developed theme.
