Shopify themes, liquid, logos, and UX
I am testing my website's newsletter sign up form. Sometimes when users hit "sign up" button they will be lead to a captcha page where the need to click the checkbox to continue. The form is using liquid's "customer" form, so I think this captcha procedure is part of shopify's setting, how do I disable it?
Hello, Yichao.
Leon here from Shopify Support.
Whenever a customer account creation attempt is made more than once in a 24 hour period from a single IP address, a page with a captcha is loaded to help protect your customer list from being inundated with spam customer account creation. During normal website operation, most of your customers won't encounter this page unless they've made an error signing up, or try to add a large volume of accounts. For this reason, I'm afraid this isn't a feature that you can turn off on your storefront.
More info about using customer accounts for your store, including how to import a large number of customer accounts from existing lists is can be found here.
Please let me know if you have further questions.
Best Wishes,
Leon

I think we understand the need for security, but as Yichao mentioned, he's trying to test a form. While testing, we need to be able to submit the form several times in a short period of time. When you start redirecting to the CAPTCHA, it takes us out of the normal flow, which ruins our testing. We need to be able to test as the user would see it.
Beyond that, when you guys DO redirect to the CAPTCHA and the user tells you they're not a robot, we lose the hash in the redirect address, so the browser won't scroll to the form to show the user the error or success message. That makes it even harder to test, since after a few submissions, we never get to see the correct flow.
This has been a significant problem for a long time now. Developers need the ability to disable the CAPTCHA function in development stores and when we are previewing alternate themes.
Totally understand the security precautions, but this seems like quite the oversight. Is there any work around planned for this? This involuntary redirect and ignoring of url query data is really messing up the UX flow fo my site.
Hey, everyone!
As Leon mentioned, the captcha that you're experiencing is a security measure to protect your account from bots mass creating customer accounts. While we don't offer a way for our merchants to turn this feature off from within the admin, we do have the ability to turn the captcha feature off by request. To do this does require that we have the expressed permission from the account before we can proceed.
If this is something you wish to have changed on your account, then feel free to post a reply here and I'll happily reach out to you via email to get the process started.

Many Thanks

Hey, @jmt, @liamgavgo!
This feature can be enabled/disabled by our support team which means requests can take up to 48 hours depending on the method you choose to reach out to our support teams. For a more immediate response, it would be best to reach out to us via phone, chat, or through social media on Twitter and Facebook.
I have gone ahead and sent you both a follow-up email requesting access to your account. If you wanted to follow up there then I can take a look into getting the captcha option removed.
