Disqus is a free discussion platform. Disqus encourages social engagement and traffic to your website as well as improving your SEO.

Disqus can be used as an alternative to our blog commenting feature, especially if you find that your blog generates a lot of comments or is receiving a lot of spam. Disqus can also be used on product pages to generate discussion about your products.

While the system integrates with Shopify, comment moderation, comment removal and general analytics are done through the Disqus platform.

It is a fairly easy system to integrate. However, if you are apprehensive or would prefer to moderate comments through Shopify, check out the Disqus integration app on our App Store.

To add Disqus to your website

  1. Sign up for your free Disqus account: https://disqus.com/profile/signup/.
  2. Select I want to install Disqus on my site.
  3. Fill out the site information and then click Create Site.
  4. On the next screen, click the Universal Code option. Two snippets of code will be generated for you.

The first snippet of code is meant to go in your Shopify theme where you want the Disqus feature to appear. The second snippet of code can go in your Shopify theme to display comment count. That will go in your theme.liquid file above the closing </body> tag. For now, copy the first snippet of code.

  5. In a new tab, open your Shopify store admin.
  6. From your Shopify admin, go to Online Store > Themes.
  7. Find the theme you want to edit, and then click Actions > Edit code.
  8. Choose where you would like the Disqus feature to appear:
    • Product page
    • Blog page

Product page

  1. Under the Templates folder, locate and click product.liquid to open it up in the online code editor.

  2. Paste your code at the bottom of the product.liquid file.
  3. Save your changes.

Your Disqus comment box should now appear on all your product pages. To learn about moderating comments, spam, and more, have a look at Disqus's Moderation help section.

Blog page

  2. If you want to use Disqus instead of Shopify's comment feature, you will need to remove the Comments section of your article.liquid template and replace it with the Disqus code. Each theme is different so be careful when you remove the code. Make a backup of your theme if necessary.
  3. Save your changes.

Your Disqus comment box should now appear on all your article pages. To learn about moderating comments, spam, and more, have a look at Disqus's Moderation help section.
