This is an accepted solution.

Thank you all for your comments and concerns about being able to edit the Country of Origin (COO) in bulk. I have an exciting discovery to share!

Updating the COO for your products can be done via CSV! However, it is edited using the Inventory CSV, not the Product CSV. See the Help Doc on Exporting or importing inventory with a CSV file for more information on using this file.

So what does this mean?

  • Merchants with large product catalogues who are needing to add in, or edit their product’s COO can now do so via the Inventory CSV.

  • For those of you who have smaller product catalogues, you may prefer to continue to use the Bulk Editor instead of dealing with exporting and importing data via CSV. Just a reminder that @NAIdo shared a great keyboard hack on 09-03-2020 to make editing dropdown menu options in the Bulk Editor quicker. @

  • Merchants whose COO also require a province or state can use the Inventory CSV to update the country. But, since it accepts  ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 country codes only, the region will still need to be manually added to each product, if required (@mtobis).

Let me know if you have any other questions about this!

Hi, @Furqan_Hameed

I’m Helen from Shopify Support. Thanks for your question.

A product CSV must follow the format here. The only additional column that can be added that won’t break the format is for a Collection.

Therefore, I recommend using the Bulk Editor to most efficiently change or add in a country of origin to your products. To access the Bulk Editor:

  • Go to Products from your Shopify admin
  • Select the products that you would like to edit using the checkboxes to the left of each product
  • Click ‘Edit Products’ at the top of your product list
  • Click on the ‘Add Fields’ drop down menu and select ‘Country of origin’. It looks like this:

23-35-se2so-0wp0h

Are you shipping your own products? Or are you dropshipping?

This bulk editor does not let you bulk edit. I still have to manually switch each product. I have over 100. Is there no other way? Shouldn't the default shipping automatically assign products to my one and only ship from location?

Bulk Editor is too Slow, we have like 40k+ listings and we can only edit 250 in one go so it will take too much of our time

and we ship our own products

Hi, @Furqan_Hameed  and @MHShop

I completely understand that large product lists can be very time consuming when using the built-in Bulk Editor. In this case, there are some third party apps within our App Store that can help you accomplish the task more quickly.

I recommend Bulk Edit & CSV import. With this app, you can edit any product parameter more automatically, using the same bulk edit options found within the Shopify Bulk Editor, including country of origin!

There is a free plan available with this app, so please install it on your store and test it out to see if it works as needed. If you have any questions about it’s functionality, please reach out to the app developer directly.

Hope this helps!

@Helen Can you explain why Country of Origin can't be added at the import level?

Hey, @mctenold. Great question!

Honestly, there isn’t a specific reason why this isn’t included at the import level at this time. However, the Shopify platform is continuously improving and adapting to the needs of our merchants, and we rely on great feedback like this to know how to make it better for you.

Therefore, I have let our developers know that including a Country of Origin column within the CSV template is something that has been requested. Thank you for that!

If you have any further questions or comments, please let me know.

Country of Origin is especially tedious to add in the Bulk Editor because it is a drop-down list, ugha

YES, Please added to export.

I share this request to have Country of Origin and HS Code added to the CSV import.

In the meantime, here is a decent work around that doesn’t require paying for a 3rd party app: When you’re in the bulk editor, after you add the Country of Origin and/or the HS Code columns to the editor and have all your products selected, you can grab multiple rows of product by holding down the shift key. Specifically: click the COO field at the top of your list, hold shift, then select the one at the very bottom of the page while holding shift and then the entire page will be selected. Once multiple rows of the field you want to edit are selected you then just need to select your country from the pull down and it will update on ALL the rows you’ve highlighted.  It makes the process much faster, allowing you to update the field page by page instead of item by item.

That works, but what is the trick to get the pull-down to open without de-selecting?

I got the dropdown to open a couple of times but not consistently.

After you've selected multiple fields, don't even click the drop down menu.  Just start typing the name of the country and they will all update.

After selecting the fields, I start typing "Can" and Canada comes up eventually.

Hello

We'd also appreciate to be able to edit country of origin with csv import.  The country of origin varies among our products, and it's not as simple to work in the Shopify bulk editor, as it is to work via my own .csv files.

Really anything that is a product attribute, we'd ideally be able to work via csv import.

Hello, @LisaD! Thanks for your feedback as well; I’ve passed it along to our developers on your behalf. Although I don’t have a timeline as to when/if this change will occur, you can keep up to date on all the recent updates to the platform on the Shopify Changelog.

In the meantime, there were two workarounds discussed earlier in the thread:

Did you happen to give either of those solutions a try yet?

This is obnoxious.  You cannot copy/paste to bulk edit this field.  You must use the drop down menu.  this is going to take forever...  Is there any other way to do this efficiently and in a reasonable manner?

In Canada a province of origin is required, and the bulk editor pull down doesn't allow this at all. So must I edit this by hand for each product? I'm not at all sure where you keep this data.

I can write code if I must, but I can't figure out how to get at this Province information. This is really quite a showstopper for my workflow. Can you please give me some idea how to achieve this without going through the product interface?

Hey, @mtobis. Modification to built-in functionalities, like the information able to be imported and exported with a CSV, is not something that is available. However, I do sincerely understand that being able to specify the province of the Country of Origin is important to you, and is having an impact on your workflow. Therefore, I have submitted another request to our developers about this on your behalf.

Reminder: All changes and updates to the platform can be found in the Shopify Changelog. It’s a good place to check regularly, and I hope you find the changes you require there in the not so distant future. All the best!

After reading all the tips in this discussion, I'll tell you what worked for me:

  •  In the bulk editor add the Country of Origin column
  •  Click the SKU of the first product and then press and hold Shift + Down arrow until all the products are selected until the end of the list. (I couldn't click the first product and then the last with shift because products are deselected when Ι scroll down)
  •  Type the Country of Origin (I couldn't select from the pull down menu, I lose selection)
  •  Save
