All things Shopify and commerce
I am trying to set-up google analytics goals to track the check-out funnel. However it looks like the url for every transaction changes on shopify. What urls can I use to put in google analytics to track the specific actions in the checkout process?
Hi @AizomeMarketing ,
Dani here from Shopify!
That's awesome that you want to track that data through Google Analytics! And you're correct, each checkout will have a unique URL. But all checkouts will have a portion of the URL in common, which is what you can use to track the information. Have you had a chance to check out our help doc on setting up goals and funnels in Google Analytics? This help doc includes the URLs that you'll want to use for your checkout funnel:
I'd also recommend tracking the Thank You page URL as this will capture those that completed the checkout process as well. the URL to track this is /checkout/thank_you.
Are you currently tracking any other key performance indicators for your site? Since you're interested in analytics, I thought you may enjoy this blog post. It's filled with other indicators that you may not have thought of, but will provide further insight into how your customers are utilizing your website.
Let me know if you have any further questions!
All the best,
Dani

We have the same issue with the "messy" URLs like
"/53505654947/checkouts/7989e3aa574dc0493026703bde3a5dee?skip_shopify_pay=true&locale=de"
instead of the cclean variant "checkout" etc.
Where can this be configured?
You give examples of what the URLs could look like. Tell us ours will be different. BUT THEN you don't tell us how to find ours. This is so unhelpful that you may as well not have even said anything.
Been battling this same problem for years. No one cares.
Slow reply but have had this come up a few times with clients so thought helpful to post.
The url sent via shopify for checkout final step will match if you use regular expression as the destination and checkout/thank_you regardless of any other elements in the url such as unique numbers or id etc.
The Funnel goal steps are just labels - adding checkout/payment etc is simply a label for what the usual next step in the funnel is and it doesnt need to match the actual url the customer sees for it to show in the funnel.
Dani's original response in 2019 is still valid and working for our clients - hope that makes sense!
Hi,
By default Shopify sends a specific page url for each of the different steps in the checkout to Google Analytics.
Even though your browser URL for the checkout will be different for each checkout, Shopify will always send: "/checkout/thank_you" as the page URL to Google Analytics.
This means you can set up your Goal Funnel like this in GA:
Hope this helps!

Hi,
We have this problem, and it's not working putting in /check_out/thank_you. Is there something else we can do?
Thanks.

Please use "/checkout/thank_you"
Hello, I confirm, that it does not work with "/checkout/thank_you"
Some areas of the analytics, such as the explorer view, will only allow you to review data for one goal set at a time, so organize your goals wisely.
I also have issues here.
My URL is not as clean as /checkout/thank_you. It looks more like this:
/53505654947/checkouts/7989e3aa574dc0493026703bde3a5dee?skip_shopify_pay=true&locale=de
/53505654947/checkouts/7989e3aa574dc0493026703bde3a5dee?previous_step=contact_information&step=shipping_method
/53505654947/checkouts/7989e3aa574dc0493026703bde3a5dee?previous_step=shipping_method&step=payment_method
/53505654947/checkouts/7989e3aa574dc0493026703bde3a5dee/thank_you
The first one is the location-id I think, but the second (7989...) seems to be customer specific or am I mistaken?
I tried to adjust it as follows with my URL and information from that page: https://www.digitaldarts.com.au/google-analytics-shopify / this post: https://community.shopify.com/c/Ecommerce-Marketing/Google-Analytics-Goal-Funnel/m-p/403554
