Why are my US card payments frequently declined with 'do not honor'?

Hi all,

Helped needed - shopify payments rejecting for reason "do not honor" these are all USA payment - I'm based in the UK. This has happened a few times before but it's like 90% of these payments now. Just USA- working fine for all other countries.

Weirdly, works with Shop Pay, Apple pay but just card payments reject for this "do not honor" reason.

Any reason why this would be happening more recently - this week basically?

Any work around? Other payment provider? Any ideas guys? Help needed!!

Hi Matt,

Hope you're doing well and are happy and healthy :).

I'm curious whether you've been able to fix this issue. I hope you have been able to fix this, since this is otherwise a bottle-neck for the business.

I'm currently experiencing the same, and Shopify keeps mentioning that it's not a problem from their side. I've reached out to many people (a.o. coders) and Shopify support a lot, but nothing helps.

Looking forward to your response!

Cheers

Hi Fabton and Matt, also struggling with the same issue. Have you by any chance found the solution?

Hi, @Dmz.

Thanks for joining the thread.

For some context, Shopify Payments may reject a payment with the reason 'do not honor' if the card issuer bank decides to decline the transaction. The merchant or customer should contact their bank to investigate the issue. If you have any questions, feel free to get in touch with our team through the Help Center. Ask the chat assistant to contact support and it'll guide you with your next steps on how to connect with a team member. From there, we can take a closer look.

What a worthless 'advice'

What is that advice. No seriously… Every single Shopify Support Person says it. What should a customer do and why would this fix the problem. 😤

I would recommend you to stop with the store. I tried everything, but even new stores got this issue after 2 weeks (so it costed me a lot of time and money for the 3 stores I was running). I now understand it's a Danish bank issue and they just block your payments at a certain moment and then the customers need to go to the bank to fix it (which they obviously don't do).

Unless there's somebody out there that found a proper solution to this, I would (unfortunately) recommend you to cease the activities of this store (and possibly sell in another country).

If I use the same store for anothet country, will it then accept payments ?

As far as I know, it’s only a Danish issue, so another country should work

Hey FabTon,

Ive been having the exact same issue as you (ive seen all your other comments on this issue and i understand your frustration).

This is a really critical issue and i am getting no conversions due to this, i have no idea how to fix it. I am based in the UK so this cant just be danish banks causing the issue, and ive had customers in the uk and the US that are getting their payments declined.

Let me know if you do get it sorted, ill try and get it sorted with shopify support in the mean time.

Hey @CS3D ,

Unfortunate to hear that you experience as similar issue. I’ve seen some other people that had stores in the UK with similar issues too and who posted something on this community too (I’m sending this message from my phone so a bit difficult to send over the respective forums, but if you search on “do not honor” I believe the pop-up easily. I would recommend you to reach out to those people, if not already done.

The only advice I can give you now based on my past experiences, is to not stay too long into this issue and try to move on a.s.a.p., by opening a new store for example. I’ve waisted too much time, energy and focus on this issue the first time haha…

Thank you for your reply.

Yeah will keep looking on the forums, shopify support was unable to help as expected.

When you say move onto a new store, do you mean opening a new store with another provider (eg squarespace) or making a new shopify store?

A new Shopify store. Shopify is still the best platform in my opinion, and the issue should not be from Shopify's side as far as I'm aware haha

Hey @FabTon , Our customers' payments are being declined, decline code do_not_honor. We have been facing this problem since yesterday morning. Our sales are badly affected. We have been successfully selling in the Danish market for 8 months now, we have never had this problem before. Do you have any idea what could be the reason?

Hey @Umair916  & @FabTon, we've also experienced the same issue this week. We run a store in Denmark and suddenly 90% of our transactions got blocked with the same error code. As I understand @FabTon there is no solution to this, even if we change payment processors? I assume moving to another market with a different store will be our only alternative..

Hey @Kats2 , I got an email from one of my customers, here is the error mentioned on their banking app "The amount of this purchase can still change (reservation)". Do you know what this could be? I've spoken to the shopify support team but they have no idea.

have had this same issue for about a month now. Only response from shopify is for customers to contact bank or to change store to euro. Selling in denmark with euro pricing is not an option haha. So have you made new stores and still faced same issue? Did you create a whole new theme or export your old theme? I am just trying to eliminate any variables that maybe causing this
