Why does my own site refer a large portion of direct traffic?

Hi all,

I have noticed a large portion of direct traffic is showing as referred from our own site, for the period I was reviewing Nov/Dec/Jan, this accounted for 44% of total direct traffic and 22% total traffic - is this normal or is there an issue here creating additional sessions or inaccurate session reporting? 

Any advise welcome.
