Does changing the default language affect SEO rankings?

Hi all,

 

we are currently switching from WooCommerce to Shopify. Our Woocommerce store is in German and translated to English. So the domain strcuture is domain.com for the German Version and domain.com/en for the English version. As the link structure will change with the switch to Shopify, I wanted to take the oppotuinity to switch the default language, as this would make our lives easier.

 

Will we see an impact on our SEO rankings, as the home page domain.com is now English instead of German?

Hey @Maxi_EHB, use Markets for this - rather than Settings > Languages. By choosing the default language in your primary market, you dictate what is the default language at domain.com. So you could, for example, have a store default language of English in Settings > Languages - which governs the language that you enter content in admin with and what language you translate from - but have German as the primary market default language. So you need not change your URLs.
