Shopify Shipping

Hello! New to the Shopify community. Planning to launch my site on Thursday and finalizing my shipping rates. I'm using Teelaunch and Gooten and was wondering whether I had to manually add the shipping rates for each item I'm offering in my store. I was under the impression that the shipping rates would be calculated automatically for me but noticed that they weren't when I was testing.  Anyone walked this walk already?

Hi @solrisingdesign,

Hyde here from Shopify. Congratulations on your imminent launch!

When using a third-party dropshipping app you are usually presented with a choice (although it's always good to check the help documentation associated with each app):

1) set up your own manual rates
2) allow the app to display their own rates directly to the store with Calculated Shipping.

When setting up your own rates, you will need to consider the possibility of fluctuating shipping costs from the supplier into your rates. It's doable of course but may mean a little more administrative work on your part cross-checking the costs listed by the app and then including them on your own.

The fact that you're using twp dropshipping apps may make this doubly-complicated because you're obviously having to factor in two different sets of shipping costs.

To allow the app to display its own calculated shipping, you will need to enable the feature on your store at an additional cost.

There are three ways to get real-time carrier calculated shipping on your account:

* 1. Upgrade to the Advanced plan which carries this feature natively. (We understand the cost for the Advanced plan is not for every merchant which is why we also offer options 2 & 3)

* 2. Add the real-time carrier calculated shipping to an existing plan at a rate of $20 per bill cycle. If we use the Basic plan as an example it would be $29 for Basic and then $20 for the real-time carrier calculated shipping for a total of $49 per bill cycle.

* 3. Pre-pay your subscription annually instead of on a 30-day cycle, and you can get 10% off of the plan, as well as real-time carrier calculated shipping included for free.

I hope this information helps. I'm happy to answer any other questions you may have about this, but you may need to also reach out to the respective app developers to get more authoritative guidance on how best to combine the two apps to the best effect.

All the best, Hyde.

Thank you Hyde!  You rock!!  All of your insight is very helpful and is a confirmation of what I've learned on my own.  I will explore calculated shipping and see if it makes sense for me right now.

This response seems like something that can help me. First, this is my first drop-shipping store and am dong the finishing touches. I have a concern about shipping. My continued struggle is the products getting to the customer. I have been reading about printing forms and returning them. I read Andrew's response that regarding the monthly fee verses the annual fee. So, does that mean that once the annual fee is paid on my account, the merchandise is shipped to the customer? would I still have to complete those tickets? Also, I have a shipping rates app installed. Would I still need that if the rates are calculated and the merchandise shipped when I choose the annual payment plan? Also, for example, would I still need any of the shipping apps? I currently have Shippo.  Please help!!!

Andrew:

You have touched upon some of my concern with the shipping. I just sent my concern. Hope it is not too confusing.

Hi @true11298

Congratulations on your first store and it's great to hear you're doing the finishing touches to it!

I want to clarify how dropshipping works because I think it may help answer most of your questions.

Dropshipping is a retail fulfillment method where a store doesn't keep the products it sells in stock. Instead, when a store sells a product, it purchases the item from a third party and has it shipped directly to the customer. As a result, the merchant never sees or handles the product.

While you are not handling the products yourself, your input is needed to fulfill orders. So to be clear: switching to an annual plan does not mean that the orders are automatically fulfilled/shipped for you. You would still absolutely need to fulfill orders yourself, and then the supplier of the product would ship the order.

How you fulfill your orders depends very much on the dropshipping app that you're using.
There's more about the various optional apps in our ultimate guide to dropshipping. The most popular app used to be Oberlo, but that is being sunset, and replaced by DSers. You can read more about that in our Oberlo Sunset FAQs. Which dropshipping app are you using?

You mentioned "returns" being a concern too. Returns and refunds are necessary to keep customers happy and avoid chargebacks. However, how you handle returns when dropshipping may also depend on the app you're using. Certainly, if you're using DSers they have a page on How Can You Manage Return of Products in Your Dropshipping Store.

If your interest in the annual plan is because of the shipping rates option, please be advised that the calculated shipping rates are really only applicable to stores that are shipping the products themselves. This is because the feature allows you to plug in certain couriers to display the rates you are using to ship the products yourself; if you're dropshipping you are not shipping the products - your supplier is!

I hope this clears up any confusion. What is it that you're selling and what dropshipping app are you using? I'd love to know more to better help you!

Andrew:

Thank you so very much for your clarity on my confusion. It helps to
answer the lingering questions/confusion I was experiencing.

However, since I originally uploaded my products from AliExpress via Obelo.
I then transferred them to Sell The Trend but since Oberlo- DSers is the
most popular app to use, is there a way that I can return the products
Oberlo?

Also, reading up on printing tickets when an order is placed, can you
please provide some clarity?

Thanks for on all your help.

Respectfully,

Sylvil Oliver
