75% Free Trial Conversion Failure – Could Payment Gateway Be the Issue?

Hi everyone,

I’m running a subscription-based Shopify store using Appstle Subscriptions and Shopify Payments as my payment provider. My store offers free trials, but 75% of customers fail to convert after the trial ends, which seems unusually high.

To address this, I introduced a $1 authorization hold during the free trial, but it didn’t improve the situation. The error messages I’m seeing for failed transactions include:

  • Your card has insufficient funds
  • Your card was declined
  • Invalid account
  • Transaction failed but user has alternate funding source
  • Your card does not support this type of purchase

While some errors (like insufficient funds) are clearly user-related, others (e.g., invalid account or unsupported purchase type) are less clear to me. This makes it challenging to determine if the issue lies with the customers, Shopify Payments, or something else entirely.

My Questions:1. Is a 75% failure rate after a free trial normal, or could it indicate an issue with Shopify Payments?

  1. Could some of these errors be due to how Shopify Payments processes subscription renewals?
  2. Would switching to another gateway like Stripe, Authorize.net, or Adyen help improve conversion rates?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Of course!
