Are third-party app permissions safe for my online store?

I’m new to Shopify and I’m trying to install some apps for my store, but some are requesting a lot of permissions that I don’t feel ok to give, here are some of the requested permissions:

Edit Shopify admin (This includes: files)

Edit your Online Store (This includes: script tags in your Online Store, pages on your Online Store, and theme.)

Is it safe to give such permissions to 3rd party apps? They also request a lot of customer information such as phone, address, IP address? are Shopify apps safe to use overall?

Thank you in advance.

I’ve been trying to get an answer for this since yesterday to be able to continue working on my site, I tried reddit shopify but my question was removed for some reason, here it seems to be ignored so far, why are these questions so difficult to answer, do you give permissions to apps blindly, is there any permissions that I should avoid giving?

Hello @sindyjb ,

Greetings from SynapseIndia, and we are glad to help you today.

Being a new member to shopify , we understand your concerns. Shopify is secure eCommerce platform . All the apps available on shopify app store are first reviewed by shopify itself before they get published & specifically the app scopes permission are observed carefully . Apps only got those scopes permissions that are relatable to their respective functionalities or features. You can also relate the access permissions of app to the desired featuring you are hoping to get from the app like whether they are relatable or not ?

Happy to answer any other queries you may have.

Hello @sindyjb ,

Greetings! I am Gina from the flareAI app helping Shopify merchants get $5Million+ in sales from Google Search, on autopilot.

It is important to be cautious when granting permissions to third-party apps in your Shopify store, as they can potentially access sensitive data and make changes to your store’s settings and code.

Here are some tips to help you assess the safety and trustworthiness of an app before granting permissions.

  1. Check the app’s reviews and ratings in the Shopify App Store. Apps with high ratings and positive reviews are generally more trustworthy.

  2. Research the app developer and their website or company. Look for information on their reputation, experience, and customer support.

  3. Review the app’s privacy policy to see what data it collects and how it is used. Make sure you are comfortable with the data being collected and shared.

  4. Look for apps that have been verified by Shopify as part of the Shopify Partner Program. These apps have been thoroughly reviewed by Shopify and are generally considered to be safe and reliable.

  5. Consider granting the minimum permissions necessary for the app to function. If an app is requesting permissions that seem excessive, it may be a red flag.

Overall, Shopify apps can be safe to use if you take the time to research and evaluate them carefully before installing and granting permissions. It is important to always prioritize the security and privacy of your store and your customers’ data.

Thank you so much for responding, some permissions seem reasonable to give. However, some seems excessive, like the two above, the “Edit Shopify admin” is this something that is ok to give to any app? I tried to find more information about this permission but couldn’t find anything, is there any resources you can point me to in order to learn more about it.

Thank you,

Sindy
