A user discovered that Shopify’s native automatic discounts cannot be applied based on customer tags or segments—a feature they previously used. Shopify staff confirmed this limitation, explaining that automatic discounts apply to all customers, while discount codes can target specific segments.
Current Workarounds:
Discount codes (not automatic) can be created for customer segments based on tags
Third-party apps recommended by multiple users:
Automatic Discounts & Gifts by StayTuned
Bold Custom Pricing: Wholesale
Advanced Automatic Discount
Selly
Stack Discounts Ninja
Howdy Customer Tag Discount
Code-based solutions were shared via LinkedIn and YouTube tutorials that work with Dawn and Prestige themes.
User Frustration:
Multiple participants expressed disappointment that this functionality isn’t built into Shopify, particularly for use cases like incentivizing account creation or rewarding newsletter subscribers with free shipping. One user requested Shopify escalate this as a feature request.
The discussion remains open with no native solution, but several viable third-party alternatives have been identified.
