Can I add PayPal Pay in 4 as a payment method on my website?

we offer Paypal but wanted to offer pay in 4 on our website checkout too. is this a thing on shopify?

do we just offer the paypal option to pay and people who want to use that option do it through there or do we add it as an alternate payment method?

any advice ?

Hi @MrP !

It’s great to hear that you would like to offer PayPal pay in 4 to your prospective customers. I am more than happy to provide some guidance on that.

With PayPal pay in 4, no integration is needed as it is already within the existing PayPal gateway. So if you have that enabled and are eligible, then you should be good to go!

There are a couple of requirements that need to be met in order to be able to use PayPal’s pay in 4 feature, however. For example, it is only currently available to merchants in the US, UK, France, Germany, and Australia. Pay in 4 can only be offered on eligible shopping cart values between $30 to $1500.

In addition to the above, some transactions are not eligible for Pay in 4 for certain merchants and goods, this includes; gaming, gambling, or digital gift cards. Let me know if that helps.

@Maz how can I add a message saying “Pay in 4 interest-free installments of ___ with PayPal Credit,” similar to the ShopPay message, in my product pages?

Hello there @txdtech !

Thanks for joining the thread!

This is a great question. While there is no native way to achieve this, I do have a couple of suggestions below:

I do trust this has been helpful, but do let me know if you need any extra information on this.

I contacted Paypal support and they basically said that Pay in 4 will not work properly with Shopify and there is very little chance that this will change in the future. Very disappointing..

Hi, @pubba26 !

I’m sorry to hear that you received disappointing news, although I cannot confirm whether or not it is true. Based on my experience, Pay in 4 does work with Shopify when the specific guidelines mentioned above are met.

If you’re looking for an alternative for installment payments, you may want to consider other third-party providers that integrate with Shopify, such as Afterpay here or Klarna at this page. These providers offer similar installment payment options as PayPal’s Pay in 4, and may be a good option for your store. Additionally, Shopify offers its own Shop Pay Installments feature for stores based in the USA, selling in USD, and with both Shopify Payments and Shop Pay activated. You can access Shop Pay Installments in the Shopify Payments settings on your store’s Payments page. Click here to learn more about Shop Pay Installments.

Furthermore, we have a couple of third party apps that offer this feature on our app store here, if you wanted to have a look.

I’d love to hear more about your business and your goals for the next quarter if you would be happy to share?

I’ve tried Klarna and Afterpay but was rejected by both because I ship orders from a central shipping location in Shenzhen, China.

In the future I’d like to start shipping orders from within Australia when the business is a little bigger, so I’ll be able to apply to Klarna and Afterpay then.

For now I’ve just given up on the idea of ‘buy now, pay later’ services, which is a shame because some of my products are popular but higher priced (USD$250+) and many customers have asked for Afterpay.

Business goals for the next quarter: Manufacture more products, improve email marketing and PPC ads.

Thanks for getting back to me, @pubba26 !

I am disappointed for you to hear that you’re unable to use Klarna or Afterpay that is definitely a bummer! However, you mentioned in the near future you’ll be able to use them once you start shipping to Australia, so I am happy to hear that!

Did you manage to have a look at the third party apps I shared above? Was there anything there that may suit you? I can totally understand why customers would want this as your products are at a higher price! Out of curiosity, what kind of products are you selling?

I am elated to hear about your business goals for the next quarter, that is a great attitude to have! To help you along with your goals, here are some resources I found below;

Does that mean that I still cant use it if I am based in Malaysia but doing ecommerce targetting US?

Hey, @LukeLai !

Thanks for subscribing to this thread.

That’s right, whether you are targeting Australia or not you cannot use PayPal Pay in 4.

As mentioned on the above thread it is only currently available to merchants residing in the US, UK, France, Germany, and Australia. You can see more information about Pay in 4 here at this link.

Have you thought about alternative pay later options? If you look at this page here for payment gateways available in Malaysia with Shopify, you can see that there are some providers with pay later options. For example, Atome PayLater is an option there. You could try adding those gateways to your store.
