Can I link an Israeli PayPal account to Shopify from Russia?

Hi all. I am a citizen of Israel and Russia, I used to live in Israel, and many years ago I opened a personal PayPal account there. I sometimes used it to make purchases. Now I live in Russia. At one time I had a store on Etsy which I linked my PayPal account to and received payments.
The account is registered to the email I use, but also to an Israeli phone number, access to which I’ve lost. Question - Can I being in Russia, tie the PayPal account to Shopify, transfer it to the Business status, and receive payments? Accordingly, withdrawing to my Russian account?

Hello @Egor007 !

According to our supported payment providers in Russia list, PayPal is indeed available if you are based in that region.

As your first step, I would recommend you either follow these steps here or contact PayPal support and ask them to help you change to the phone number that you’re using right now - this will avoid issues further down the line.

As for tying the account - I also suggest you make sure that when you sign up for Shopify, do this with the same email address that is on your PayPal account. For additional information, see our help doc on how to set up PayPal.

Lastly, you mentioned that you used to have an Etsy store - is this your first time on Shopify? If so, please do check out our guide from our Shopify Blog on How to Start an Online Store - this is a very step-by-step guide that shows you how you can get set up with us.

Hello Lana, thank you for your reply.
Tell me please, what if in the process of working with Shopify, I want to change my PayPal account, which will be registered to an e-mail address different from the one the store is registered to. How does Shopify treat this?

You will be able to change your email address if you wish by deactivating your PayPal account and setting up again in Settings > Payments.

The reason we suggest to create your Shopify account under the same email as your PayPal account is because when an account is created, PayPal is automatically populated with the account email address. This works as a ‘provisional’ measure, even if there is no PayPal account associated with that email yet.

In your case, since it would be an email that is already associated with a PayPal account, the setup will be a lot quicker and it will just be a matter of setting up the permissions for the gateway to work on your store, which you will find is part of the process when you first set up, as detailed in the help doc I mentioned before.

To summarise here again, it will be possible to change your account to a different one, but if you use the email address already associated with a PayPal account, your setup will be quicker.
