Can I sell virtual gift cards in-store using POS system?

Hi there, is it possible to sell gift cards in the store using my POS without physical gift cards. Can the code be printed on a receipt when a customer buys a gift card in store?

Mac here from Shopify. Thanks for reaching out in our Community forums.

I’m happy to say that it is definitely possible to issue gift cards using your POS system, without the need of a physical card. Here are the following formats in which you can use:

  • A physical gift card
  • An online gift card that you email to the customer
  • A paper copy that you print from your receipt printer

With any of these formats, your customers can use gift cards to make purchases from your store both in person and online. If you decide to go the paperless route, the easiest solution is through emailing gift cards. You will essentially generate a gift card code, and once the customer makes the purchase, it will be automatically emailed to them right away.

Good morning - thank you for your reply. I have created the gift card product. Can you clarify how I generate a gift card code when selling from the POS?

I’m happy to hear that you were able to create the gift cards. I’d love to provide some insight on how to generate a gift card code on the POS system.

Now that you have the gift card added, you will go through the same process of adding a product to the cart on the POS. Once you select the card, you will be prompted to pick the value denomination and have the ability to generate a code. Once the customer checks out, you will have the options to email, text or print the receipt and the gift card code will be sent directly to the customer. We have a step-by-step guide that you can check out here on how to do this in more detail. In addition, you can do a test transaction to ensure that everything is running smoothly.
