Can MBWay be integrated with Shopify Payments in Portugal?

Hello all! I really love using shopify payments and the transparent checkout it provides, but the problem is nowdays, MBWay is the leading payment method in Portugal. Without MBWay in Portugal is like Brazil without Pix or Boleto. It would be a gane changer in shopify conversions for Portugal. Is there any way to do this in Shopify Payments? Are there any plans for it?

Thanks

Hi, @Books4all .

Thanks for reaching out in our Community Forums about this. I’m glad to hear that you’re enjoying using our Shopify Payments gateway, and appreciate the request to expand its offering by including the MB Way payment method.

MB Way isn’t currently available through Shopify Payments, but I understand that it’s a highly popular payment method for the Portuguese region, and that implementing it to a store catered for the Portuguese market would be highly beneficial for a seamless customer payment experience. Because of this, I’ll be sure to pass on your thoughts as feedback to our internal development team, so that they’re aware of the growing interest in MB Way.

I’m unable to verify or share any details about the future of Shopify Payments, or confirm if or when MB Way will be implemented to our platform. I recommend bookmarking our Changelog here however, so that you can keep up to date with the latest releases to our platform. You can use the ‘Payments’ filter on the right hand-side of the page to filter out our payment-related only releases.

In the meantime however, as a workaround and to configure MB Way on your store, you can:

  • Use a third-party integration like EuPago and Ifthenpay: Just a note that while these aren’t approved gateways, they seem to work for merchants wanting to use MB Way, even when Shopify Payments is activated. It will usually add MB Way as a manual payment method, as well as a script on the checkout settings within the order status page. Merchants may also see a custom app installed as well, to help with its integration. As this involves a third-party gateway however, you can contact the provider’s support team directly for more information so that they can further assist.

  • Manual payment method: MB Way can also be enabled as a manual payment method, where you add a phone number to be displayed on the checkout page and/or the order confirmation page. The buyer will then complete their order on your store’s checkout and be required to make the order payment through the MB Way app. Once the buyer has successfully completed their payment, you’ll then have to check your bank account to confirm if the payment has been received before fulfilling the order on your store. You can refer to this guide for more information on creating a manual payment method on your store.

Hi,

I followed the second option and set up MB Way as a manual payment method.

I made a test order, and in the order details the payment appears as pending, which is perfect, but the order confirmation email is sent as if the order has been paid. This might be confusing for customers and may lead to misunderstandings:

I’m trying to change the email in Settings>> Notifications >> Customer Notifications >> Order Confirmation. In the code I see there are the correct phrases at {% if has_pending_payment %} : Thank you for your purchase! / You’ll get a confirmation email after completing your payment.

I don’t understand why if the order details have a pending payment status, the customer notification does not read it as such (my knowledge of code is limited)

What changes can I make to get the correct email sent to the customers paying with MB Way? And is there a way that, when I manually change the order to paid, the customer receives it’s corresponding email?

Thank you very much!

Thank you for sharing that context! It’s difficult to say why that confirmation email was sent out without seeing more details from your account. I’d recommend reaching out to our support team through the Help Center here so that we can look into this with you in more detail. We can’t see any of your account information here over the Shopify Community, but if you speak with us through the Help Center we can help further. This guide on customizing notifications can help in the meantime as well.

Hi! I have the exact same question! Did you find a way to do this? If yes, could you share how?

I still have some lingering questions :slightly_smiling_face:

Thanks!

If you have a Stripe account, try Easy⋮⋮Pie Checkout, which supports MB WAY, Multibanco, and many other payment methods available in your Stripe account.
