I have a question regarding the use of two languages in one store.
The main language in my store is English as I live in Australia but I want to target the costumers from my homeland that also live in Australia but our mother language is not available trough Shopify.
Now how would it work if I leave the store in English but have the product description ,tags and metafiels in other language? Are search engines going to recognise other language even if the store is set to English?
If you’d like to give your customers the option of translating your online store to their preferred language, you can do this by installing a language translator app to your store. There are a few apps on our Shopify App store that can help you achieve this, but I did find a couple that you might be interested in. Feel free to take a closer look at them:
Just a note that these apps are made by third-party developers outside of Shopify. So if you need more information about the app’s functionality, you can get in touch with the app support team as they’re best equipped to answer app specific questions.
It also looks like most of the translator apps, including the two I linked above, are SEO friendly. Each app has more information about this aspect of their functionality within their app page, if you’d like to read more about it.
It’s really great to see that you’re looking to translate your storefront to other languages, as this creates for a more positive customer experience on your store. Do you have a large number of international visitors on your store? If so, and if your store is on the Shopify plan or above, you can also look into assigning your languages to an international domain. You can read more about international domains here, on our Help Centre document.
Hi @Kimi_2 thanks for your reply. I didn’t want to use the language translation app but only to ask if this what I had in mind would work. To have the store in English but the product description ,tags, in other language because my clothing line designs are in my mother language .
Hi @Biljana_1 thank you for visiting the Shopify Forum
If you’d like to give the best experience to your customers the ideal scenario is doing another Shopify Store, translating everything there including the English parts and finally connecting both stores with a selector in the nav bar with code. This would be the best. (Alternatively, Shopify Plus offers multiple storefronts)
In my experience the problem with apps is not only the SEO but they always have problems and errors and don’t give a professional feel to the store.
Let us know if you would like to setup another store in your home language.
Hoped it helped

Was there a reason that you’d like to leave the store’s navigation language to English, but change everything else to your native language?
When setting a language to your store, a major aspect of this is to ensure that both customers and search engines are able to locate the correct version or language of your website. If a published language is added within your Shopify admin, our system will automatically include any published languages in sitemaps, as well as add meta tags and hreflang tags that will help search engines detect the language of your store.
If you’re simply translating the product descriptions without updating the Shopify store to a different language, in order to help search engines find your store’s content you may need to create a sitemap with the language content included within it.
To get further help with updating sitemaps and optimising your store’s SEO for selling in another language, you can look into hiring one of our Shopify Experts to help you come up with a tailored solution for your store.
