Can someone help me figure out how to translate image alt texts into multiple languages?

Hello, community,

My store has 4 languages and I plan on adding even more.

Most of it is translated using Shopify’s Translate & Adapt app - works OK.

I am stuck with Alt text for each image and language. How can I do it? - practically.

Thanks,

Hi @Craft-Society ,

Michael from Langify here.

You can additionally use Langify to translate your alt texts using the Custom Content feature in

Langify → Custom → Product Pages

Here’s a short guide on how to use the Custom Content feature:

https://support.langify-app.com/support/solutions/articles/11000082059-custom-content-translations

Here’s an example:

I’d like to translate the following alt-text which is “grey rounded nike shoes with a large sole”:

To do this I add it in

Langify → Custom → Product Pages → Add New Custom Content

Now I simply auto-translate this text via the green “auto-translate” button to the top right of the custom content:

And finally check whether the translation shows up on the storefront as expected:

Done

I checked the alt-text directly inside the code but you can use a Chrome Extension like Image Alt Text Viewer to make it visible:

PS: Langify and Translate & Adapt work well together since both translation apps use the Shopify API to store your translations.

Hi @michaelivanov_1 ,

Great feature. I work with Translate & Adapt. I’m considering installing Langify only to allow translation of Alt Texts. One question: if I install Langify, do my translations 2-3 times a year and uninstall the Langify application when I’m not using it, will my translations remain in the code?

Hi @Baptgrrr ,

Yes, your translations will remain in Shopify and should show up in Translate & Adapt as well since both Translate & Adapt as well as Langify use the Shopify GraphQL API to sync your translations.

You can also export your translations either from Langify or export them directly from Shopify anytime you want.

That way you’ll always have a backup of your translations just in case.

Hi @Craft-Society ,

For translating image alt texts across multiple languages, you can try the EZ Product Image Translate app. It integrates with Shopify’s Translate & Adapt and allows you to manage alt text translations efficiently for all your images. This might solve the issue you’re facing with alt texts not appearing in your translation app.

Give it a try and see if it helps!

Best regards,

Gofortiss

Just to add:

In case the Custom Contents don’t work please make sure that Langify has been published and that your Langify Polyfill code has been added to your Theme in

Langify → Dashboard → Theme Settings
