I want to start selling on Shopify, but I am under 18 and I’ve researched that a need to use a SSN of someone over 18. If I do this how much will it affect their taxes?
Hey @Lucas_26 ,
The account owner of a Shopify store must be over 18, however staff members and employees of the store are allowed to be minors. Because of this, if you’re under 18 you’ll need to do the following:
- Change the account owner of your store to your parent or guardian by following the steps found here.
- You’ll then be able to leave yourself listed as a staff account for the store, as described here.
- Your parent or guardian will need to add their credit card as the billing method for the store, which they can do by following these instructions.
Once all of the above has been completed, please get in touch with our Live Support team so that we can guide you with your next steps. To get in touch with our team, you’ll need to login to your store via our help centre here. Once logged in, select a topic that best fits your query or situation. From there, you’ll be taken to a page with a list of relevant support articles, and you can scroll to the bottom of that page to select your preferred contact method with our team.
In regards to taxes, you’ll need to consult with a local tax professional so that they can help determine whether or not your store should be charging sales tax. They can also help make sure that you’re charging, filing and remitting any sales tax you collect correctly. More information on this can be found here.
