Cayman Islands Shopify POS Card Reader Terminals

Hello!

My store in the Cayman Islands is due to open in a few months. I am in the process of planning the POs side of things. I saw that there are a few stores in the Cayman Islands that use Shopify, it none can confirm if they can use the Shopify Card Readers, as opposed to bank issued readers to process debit/credit cards.

I have, however, confirmed with my bank that they can integrate online payments via Shopify. And, when I check the Shopify website it lists a bunch of payment providers that are available here. But, there seems to be a difference between online processing and in-store processing via the card reader terminal provided by Shopify.

My question is if anyone can confirm that if my bank does offer online services to process payments, can Shopify POs be configured to work for in-store transactions too?

You’re correct — Shopify’s online payment options and their in-person POS card reader options aren’t always the same thing.

For the Cayman Islands specifically:

  • Online payments — If your bank integrates with Shopify via one of the listed payment providers, you can absolutely accept payments on your Shopify store.

  • In-person payments with Shopify POS card readers — Shopify’s own card readers (like the WisePad 3 or WisePOS E) are only officially supported in certain countries. Unfortunately, the Cayman Islands is not currently on the supported list for Shopify Payments + card reader hardware.

That means:

  • You can still use Shopify POS for your in-store sales, but you’d need to process card payments through a third-party terminal provided by your bank or a local payment processor.

  • In practice, you’d ring up the sale in Shopify POS, mark it as “custom payment” or “external terminal,” then process the card on your bank’s machine.

If you want everything fully integrated so the card reader talks directly to Shopify POS, you’d need a payment provider and reader setup that Shopify supports for your country — and right now, that’s not available in Cayman Islands.

Your best move would be:

  1. Use Shopify POS for inventory, orders, and receipts.

  2. Process in-person payments through your bank’s terminal alongside it.

Thank you both @Sapphire3 @Emmy9 for your speedy reply’s.

So there is no custom sdk option, as there is for online payments available?

If not, can I still use the device for its Apple Wallet function to use in conjunction with Membership/Loyalty Cards?

I also like that it can be used as a customer facing display. Would all the other features still be available for use, other than the credit card transactional feature?
