Connected my Wordpress blog's domain to Shopify and original site not showing after disconnecting

Topic summary

Main issue: After connecting a GoDaddy-hosted WordPress blog domain to Shopify, the domain showed a Shopify-branded error page even after disconnecting from Shopify.

Initial guidance: Reconnect the domain to WordPress and remove Shopify DNS entries (A record and CNAME) from the domain. Allow 24–48 hours for DNS propagation (the time DNS changes take to update globally). A record maps a domain to an IP address; CNAME is an alias record.

User updates: Waiting 48 hours and standard GoDaddy disconnect/reconnect steps did not restore the site. The domain was only “connected” to Shopify as a third-party domain, not transferred.

Resolution: GoDaddy fully removed the domain from their hosting and then reconnected it. After this complete removal/re-attachment, the original WordPress site appeared again.

Outcome/status: Resolved. Key takeaway—ensure all Shopify DNS records are removed, point DNS back to WordPress, allow for propagation, and if issues persist, have the registrar/host purge the domain from hosting and re-add it.

I connected my Wordpress blog domain (godaddy) to Shopify not realising it would overtake my entire 10 year old blog. I then disconnected the domain from Shopify, but my original site still won’t show. Instead I get a Shopify branded error page. Why won’t it revert back to my Wordpress blog after disconnecting my domain from Shopify? There is no number to call for support and the messages I send through chat will not appear in the chat box.

Shopify error message page:

There was a problem loading this website

Try refreshing the page.

If the site still doesn’t load, please try again in a few minutes.

Hi @organicbeautylo When you have disconnected it from shopify, you need to connect the domain with wordpress then it will work, also you need to remove the A record of shopify and Name of shopify from the domain and it will solve your issue.

Hopefully it will help you. If yes then Please don’t forget hit Like and Mark it as solution!

Hi thank you, Godaddy support has tried all this and it still will not revert back to my original site.

Hi @organicbeautylo Some time it take around 24-48 hrs to transfer it and reflect the correct site, you can ask the same from godaddy support as well. Also while connecting with shopify which option did you selected? did you transfer the domain to shopify or you just connect the 3rd party domain?

Hopefully it will help you. If yes then Please don’t forget hit Like and Mark it as solution!

Yes I did wait the 48 hours. They even disconnected my domain from their hosting and reconnected and nothing was fixed. I just connected 3rd party domain. very frustrating I can’t get my site back.

fixed - godaddy had to completely remove my domain from THEIR hosting and reconnect to get my site to show again.

Hi @organicbeautylo Great to hear that, now you should be relieved.
